Le théâtre en langue française, qui fut au centre des occupations quotidiennes de la cour et des élites urbaines russes au XVIIIe siècle, n'a jamais été exploré de manière systématique. L'ouvrage d'Alexeï Evstratov vient combler ce manque, en proposant une étude interdisciplinaire des spectacles représentés en français dans la capitale de l'Empire de Russie de 1743 - date de l'installation de la première troupe permanente de comédiens français en Russie - à la mort de Catherine II en 1796. Cette reconstitution du théâtre francophone joué à Saint-Pétersbourg, envisagé comme phénomène artistique, social et politique, met en évidence les interactions entre le projet des autorités, les troupes de comédiens, le répertoire et les pratiques sociales à l'uvre dans la salle. Alexeï Evstratov propose une vision d'ensemble des multiples aspects des spectacles francophones: il dresse le répertoire des pièces jouées en langue française à la cour et dans la ville, analyse le déroulement des représentations et les discours théoriques qui les accompagnent. Il montre ainsi que les spectacles francophones étaient au cur de la politique culturelle de Catherine II, et que l'importation de nouvelles pratiques culturelles a permis de créer une société locale supervisée par la cour. Les spectacles jouent en effet un rôle primordial dans la définition des frontières mouvantes entre la cour et la ville, la scène et la salle, la sphère publique et la sphère privée. Dans cet ouvrage, la réflexion de l'auteur s'articule d'une part autour de l'expérience théâtrale, notamment par la reconstitution du cadre de réception du répertoire francophone par les différents publics, et d'autre part autour des transferts culturels entre la France et la Russie au XVIIIe siècle. Son enquête sur les comédiens, les spectateurs, les uvres et les représentations des spectacles contribue ainsi au récit de l'invention d'une société.
