Les Rêveries du promeneur solitaire est une publication posthume de l'écrivain et philosophe genevois d'expression française, Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Il constitue le dernier de ses écrits, la partie finale ayant vraisemblablement été conçue quelques semaines avant sa mort, et l'oeuvre étant inachevée. Sa rédaction s'est établie tout au long des deux dernières années de sa vie, jusqu'à son refuge au château d'Ermenonville: la nature solitaire et paranoïaque de l'auteur malgré une notoriété croissante, l'a contraint à cet exil après l'accueil de ses Dialogues, et peut-être également la mort de Louis François de Bourbon (dit le Prince de Conti) durant l'été 1776. Les Rêveries du promeneur solitaire tiennent à la fois de l'autobiographie et de la réflexion philosophique: elles constituent un ensemble d'une centaine de pages, l'auteur employant très généralement la première personne du singulier et apportant par digressions quelques détails sur sa vie. Le livre, qui se présente comme "un informe journal de [des] rêveries" de Rousseau, est composé de dix sections inégales, appelées promenades, qui sont des réflexions sur la nature de l'Homme et son Esprit. Rousseau, à travers cet ouvrage, présente une vision philosophique du bonheur, proche de la contemplation, de l'état ataraxique, à travers un isolement relatif, une vie paisible, et surtout, une relation fusionnelle avec la nature, développée par la marche, la contemplation, l'herboristerie que Rousseau pratique. Ces Rêveries cherchent à produire chez le lecteur un sentiment d'empathie qui lui permettrait à travers l'auteur de mieux se saisir lui-même. Avec les Confessions, Jean-Jacques voulait d'abord faire la lumière sur le citoyen Rousseau et sur sa vie; cette oeuvre postérieure est davantage une invitation au voyage et une réflexion générale sur son mode de pensée.
About the Author: Jean-Jacques Rousseau, né le 28 juin 1712 à Genève et mort le 2 juillet 1778 (à 66 ans) à Ermenonville, est un écrivain, philosophe et musicien genevois francophone. La vie de Jean-Jacques Rousseau est une vie d'indépendance et d'instabilité. Il quitte d'abord Genève à seize ans pour la Savoie, où il reçoit un complément d'éducation et une initiation à l'amour par Mme de Warens avant de gagner Paris en 1742, pensant faire carrière dans la musique. Il mène alors une existence difficile, cherchant divers protecteurs et vivant avec Thérèse Levasseur, qui lui donnera cinq enfants, tous confiés à l'Assistance publique. Dans le même temps, il rencontre Diderot et écrit des articles sur la musique pour l'Encyclopédie. Son oeuvre ( structurée et décidée disait Raymond Trousson) participe à l'esprit des Lumières par son rejet des régimes autocratiques, mais il s'en distingue notamment quant à l'idée que le siècle serait un heureux siècle de fer et de progrès comme chez Voltaire: Tout sert au luxe, au plaisir de ce monde. Oh ! le bon temps que ce siècle de fer !, Voltaire, Le Mondain (1726). Entretenant de façon générale des relations interpersonnelles difficiles, il se réfugie plusieurs fois dans la solitude, séjournant de nouveau en Suisse en 1762 après la condamnation de ses ouvrages par le Parlement de Paris. Il entreprend alors d'écrire son autobiographie pour se justifier et multiplie les lieux de résidence, pour finalement retourner à Paris en 1770 et vivre en copiant de la musique. Il meurt à 66 ans en 1778 et sa dépouille sera transférée au Panthéon par la Convention au moment de la Révolution française en 1794.
