About the Author: Louisa May Alcott, née le 29 novembre 1832 à Germantown en Pennsylvanie, et morte le 6 mars 1888 à Boston, est une romancière américaine, connue surtout pour son roman Les Quatre Filles du docteur March (Little Women). Deuxième d'une fratrie de quatre filles, elle est éduquée par un père philosophe dont les vues sur la manière d'élever des enfants sont exigeantes, et par Henry David Thoreau, le poète et enseignant; elle a aussi pour maître le philosophe Ralph Waldo Emerson, mais ne fréquentera aucune école. Elle écrit des contes dès son plus jeune âge et, en 1848, rédige son premier livre Fables de fleurs. Le tempérament parfois violent de son père et l'incapacité de celui-ci à pourvoir correctement aux besoins de sa famille, donne lieu à des conflits entre les parents de Louisa May et l'oblige, ses soeurs et elle, à travailler à un jeune âge. Elle sera tour à tour professeur occasionnel, couturière, gouvernante, aide domestique et écrivain. Sa mère travaillera également aux oeuvres sociales auprès des immigrants irlandais
