Elles vivent à Concord dans l'État du Massachusetts avec leur mère et leur fidèle domestique, Hannah. Autrefois riche, la famille March a été ruinée lorsque Mr. March avait aidé un ami dans ses affaires, ce qui avait entraîné la faillite. Malgré cela, la famille est heureuse et n'oublie pas d'aider plus pauvre qu'elle.
About the Author: Louisa May Alcott (29 novembre 1832 à Germantown en Pennsylvanie - 6 mars 1888 à Boston) est une romancière américaine, connue surtout pour son roman Les Quatre Filles du docteur March (Little Women). Biographie; Deuxième d'une fratrie de quatre filles, elle est éduquée par un père philosophe dont les vues sur la manière d'élever des enfants sont exigeantes, et par Henry David Thoreau, le poète et enseignant; elle a aussi pour maître le philosophe Ralph Waldo Emerson, mais ne fréquentera aucune école. Elle écrit des contes dès son plus jeune âge et, dès seize ans, rédige son premier livre: Fables de fleurs. Le tempérament parfois violent de son père et l'incapacité de celui-ci à pourvoir correctement aux besoins de sa famille, donne lieu à des conflits entre les parents de Louisa May et l'oblige, ses soeurs et elle, à travailler à un jeune âge. Elle sera tout à tour professeur occasionnel, couturière, gouvernante, aide domestique et écrivain. Sa mère travaillera également aux oeuvres sociales auprès des immigrants irlandais. Adulte, elle défend la cause de l'abolition de l'esclavage et de l'émancipation des femmes. Elle publie un livre sur son expérience d'infirmière durant la Guerre de Sécession, et un premier roman en 1864. Trois ans plus tard, elle accepte de diriger un journal pour enfants et de composer une histoire à l'intention des jeunes lectrices. Ce sera Les Quatre Filles du docteur March (Little Women), parue en 1868. Tableau de la vie américaine dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, le livre remporta un si vif succès qu'elle en publia une suite: Le Docteur March marie ses filles (Good Wives) en 1869. Deux autres livres sur les soeurs March existent également: Le Rêve de Jo March et La Grande Famille de Jo March. Ses modèles étaient ses parents, ses soeurs, ses amis de la Nouvelle-Angleterre et d'Europe. Elle s'était peinte fidèlement, dit-on, sous les traits de Jo. Ayant contracté la fièvre typhoïde durant son service pendant la guerre de Sécession, elle souffrira de problèmes de santé chroniques. Elle meurt à Boston l'âge de 55 ans, deux jours après le décès de son père. Au début de sa carrière, parallèlement à ses livres pour les enfants, Louisa May Alcott a également écrit des romans noirs gothiques sous le pseudonyme de A. M. Barnard. Elle a également écrit des oeuvres plus sombres telles que Les Yeux de Lady MacBeth. Son journal intime et sa correspondance ont également été publiés.
