About the Book

Tragically, Lucienne Hollard McKay died too young. But in those short years, she lived an extraordinary life. During World War II, Lucienne worked closely with the nameless heroes of the French Underground. Everywhere she went, she remained a dauntless spirit with an unmatched verve for experiencing joy.

In her brief lifetime, Lucienne transcribed many of her personal thoughts into poems. Filled with pain, delight, gaiety, fantasy, and ecstasy, her poems are intensely personal. Penned in the author's native French, Lucienne's poems were never intended for publication. But here, in her memory, her American husband has collected more than fifty of her haunting works.

Within these pages, you will find all the delicate nuances of the poet's original expression. Daydreams commingle with reality, life and death are interwoven, and the reader will find an ethereal beauty-even in the midst of tragedy. Lilian Polk, in dedicated friendship, has thoughtfully translated Lucienne's pieces into English. Polk's translations appear side by side with the original French creations. No memorial other than this book could conceivably preserve the exquisite personality of its author.
About the Author: Lucienne Hollard was born in Taintaux, Vosges, France, in 1916. She died an American citizen in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1968. Educated in private schools and at the University of Nancy, she had been a close friend of Colette, who had encouraged the publication of her novel, Elisabeth. During World War II bombings, her entire family had perished, and she had become a member of the French Underground. Dr. Edwin Douglass McKay had arrived in France with the American Army of Occupation. He and Lucienne met under the Arch of Triumph. They were married in Louisiana after the war's end. Mrs. McKay's translator, Lilian Polk, is a writer of short stories and poems, has taught French, and traveled widely.
