Au lendemain de la guerre, les organisations juives se retrouvent face au desarroi de nombreux orphelins, fils et filles de deportes juifs, la plupart d'origine etrangere. Diverses associations, actives depuis l'entre-deux guerres, mettent en place des structures afin de les recueillir, de leur donner une education et une formation pratique, de leur offrir une emancipation. Ceci avec l'aide financiere de l'Etat, mais surtout de la diaspora americaine (en particulier Le Joint ), et aussi, des sa creation, de l'Etat d'Israel. On comptera environ 50 de ces maisons d'accueil pour environ 3000 orphelins. C'est l'histoire de ces " maisons de l'espoir ", tres differentes selon leur ideologie (des traditionalistes aux socialistes revolutionnaires) et de ces enfants, que Katy Hazan se propose de raconter. Oeuvre de vie, ces maisons furent un formidable defi a la Shoah: defi releve dans le souci de ne pas laisser ces enfants aux soins de l'Assistance publique, defi humain contre la mort, utopie creatrice et positive dans une apres-guerre plus que morose. Par leur existence, ces collectivites posent une question, fil conducteur de ce travail: que signifie etre juif apres la Shoah, a une epoque ou le modele integrateur republicain reprend toute sa place, sinon sa legitimite, tout en affirmant fermer la parenthese malheureuse de Vichy ? Comment, dans cet immediat apres-guerre, la question identitaire se pose-t-elle a travers la prise en charge des enfants ? Dans ce travail original, Katy Hazan allie la rigueur de l'historienne a un travail de memoire et de " proximite " d'une grande densite emotionnelle. Etudiant les conditions d'emergence de ces maisons de l'espoir, elle a reuni, en recoupant des informations eparpillees et lacunaires, une centaine de temoignages, sous forme d'entretiens: ils permettent de rendre compte, de maniere extremement vivante, de ces lieux de vie, avec leurs ambiguites, leurs echecs, leurs reussites. Ces temoignages detaillent les differentes methodes educatives, mettent en lumiere des paradoxes entre la generosite des projets et l'utopie messianique (construction de " l'homme juif nouveau " dans la realite de lendemains qui dechantent). Helas, le travail de deuil necessaire fut neglige: parce que l'on tut la mort des parents (sujet tabou) et ses raisons, on entretint chez beaucoup l'espoir de les revoir. C'est aussi de ce deuil a faire, aujourd'hui encore, que parlent ces orphelins desormais grand-parents.
