Portrait d'une famille brisée: le père riche industriel Joseph Oberlé, collabore avec les occupants allemands, il envoi son fils faire ses études de droit en Allemagne, et souhaite que sa fille Lucienne Oberlé devienne l'épouse d'un Allemand, contrairement aux idées résistantes de son épouse Monique Oberlé, née Monique Biehler, de son fils Jean Oberlé, ainsi que son beau-père, Monsieur Philippe Oberlé. Lucienne fréquente un puissant officier Allemand Wilhelm Von Farnow, qui souhaite l'épouser, mais lors de sa visite dans la maison familliale des Oberlé à Alsheim en Alsace, le grand-père les chasse, lui et son oncle, le comte Von Kassewitz. Kassiwitz conseille à son neveu de ne pas épouser Lucienne, ce qu'il refuse. La mère Oberlé cède en prêtant aux amoureux la maison Biehler à Obernai. Jean Oberlé tombe amoureux d'Odile Bastian, dont le père est un grand résistant, qui refuse que Odile sa fille épouse Jean, en raison qu'elle serait par conséquent la belle soeur d'un officier Allemand. Jean est très triste et décide pour l'amour de la France, de déserter l'armée Allemande dans laquelle il était obligé de faire son service militaire, pour s'enfuir en France. Jean part dire son projet au père Bastian, dit adieu à la femme qu'il aime. Il s'enfuit avec son Oncle, après avoir feint de commencer son service militaire dans la caserne Saint Nicolas, est pourchassé, mais est recueilli blessé par des frontaliers français. Le livre termine sur le chant du coq et jean endormi, dans la maison des frontaliers français.
About the Author: René Bazin, né à Angers le 26 décembre 1853 et mort à Paris le 20 juillet 1932, est un écrivain français, à la fois juriste et professeur de droit, romancier, journaliste, historien, essayiste et auteur de récits de voyages. Biographie: Après une licence de droit à Paris, René Bazin suit les cours de la Faculté catholique d'Angers et obtient un doctorat en droit (1877). En 1882, il tient la chaire de droit criminel. En 1876, il se marie avec mademoiselle Aline Bricard; le couple aura deux fils, dont le romancier et traducteur Louis-René Bazin, et six filles. Toute sa vie, il est porté par les valeurs que représentent la Monarchie et que l'Église continue à défendre. En 1915, il est élu président de la Corporation des Publicistes Chrétiens, qui se fait appeler aussi Syndicat des journalistes français, et en 1917, il fonde le Bureau Catholique de la Presse.
