Il y a l'apparence et la realite, la surface et les strates successives qui, de descente en descente dans les profondeurs du mythe, livreront peut-etre au mythologue mue en speleologue la signification la plus ancienne. Elle permet de decouvrir, au-dela de l'admirable torse pivotant du Discobole de Myron, les dieux de la vegetation bulbeuse que veneraient les premiers hommes. Elle met en lumiere la propension des Grecs a eloigner dans l'espace et dans le temps aussi bien le monde ideal (les pays au parfum ou habitent les dieux, les contrees de justice, d'abondance et de bonheur des Hyperboreens et des Ethiopiens) que l'humanite qui s'entretue et s'entredevore, une humanite enferocee qui, selon les Grecs, ne saurait etre que barbare, non-grecque. Mais cette operation de propagande, consciente ou inconsciente, est manquee: les mythes devoilent, les mythes denoncent. Tome II. L'initiation Au troisieme millenaire se pratiquent encore chez certains peuples (Afrique, Nouvelle-Guinee, Amerindiens) des rites initiatiques tres proches de ceux que les Grecs ont connus bien avant Homere. A l'epoque classique il en restait des souvenirs, surtout dans les pays des confins, mais aussi dans les institutions des cites les plus civilisees (comme Athenes, Sparte, Thebes ou Corinthe), et plus encore dans leurs mythes. Cet ouvrage s'efforce de degager dix-sept traits initiatiques, les plus frequents, avant d'entrer dans le detail des mythes, poser les questions et tenter de les resoudre. Par exemple: quel rapport y a-t-il entre le labyrinthe et la danse de la grue executee par Thesee et ses compagnons apres la victoire sur le Minotaure ? D'ou vient la granitula, une danse encore executee en Italie du sud et en Corse du nord le jour du Vendredi Saint ? Pourquoi tant de heros portent-ils le nom du loup, de Lycomede aux nombreux Lykos en passant par Autolykos, Harpalykos, Lykas, Lykenion ou Lycurgue ? Telles sont quelques-unes des questions qui sont posees dans cet ouvrage. Bien entendu, la place finale, la place d'honneur, est reservee a Ulysse, le plus " eprouve " de tous les heros grecs. Ces Mythes Grecs I & II sont le fruit d'une recherche commencee il y a un tiers de siecle. Ils ont fait l'objet d'une premiere publication par les Publications de la Recherche, Universite Paul-Valery, Montpellier III, en 1999 pour Mythes Grecs Iet en 2002 pour Mythes Grecs II. Dans chaque tome un index facilite la recherche d'informations sur les heros et les dieux etudies.
