Les Misérables est un roman de Victor Hugo paru en 1862. Il a donné lieu à de nombreuses adaptations, au cinéma et sur de nombreux autres supports.Dans ce roman emblématique de la littérature française qui décrit la vie de pauvres gens dans Paris et la France provinciale du xixe siècle, l'auteur s'attache plus particulièrement au destin du bagnard Jean Valjean. C'est un roman historique, social et philosophique dans lequel on retrouve les idéaux du romantisme et ceux de Victor Hugo concernant la nature humaine.Il n'y avait presque plus de cartouches dans la barricade alors Gavroche sortit et alla en chercher. Dehors, on commença à lui tirer dessus. Mais il nargue ses assaillants en chantant. Une balle mieux visée le toucha et le tua. Jean était arrivé et en voyant Javert demanda de le tuer. À l'abri des regards, Jean le laisse s'échapper. Dans la barricade, c'est l'agonie. Marius s'est fait tirer dessus à la clavicule. Jean le rattrapa et s'enfuit dans les égouts avec l'homme sur le dos. Il trouva une lettre de Marius que celui-ci avait laissé pour les gens qui retrouveraient son cadavre. Elle disait de l'amené chez M Guillenormand. À un moment, Jean se retrouva sous une grille fermée à clef. Un homme était là et il le reconnut aussitôt: Thénardier. Mais celui-ci ne reconnut pas Jean Valjean. Il pensa qu'il avait tué Marius pour son argent alors il lui demande de l'or contre la clef de la grille. L'échange fut fait et Jean sortit. Sur la terre ferme, il reconnaît Javert. Ils allèrent ensemble chez M Guillenormand. Arrivés, Marius reprit connaissance. Pendant ce temps, Javert se suicida en tombant dans la Seine. Durant plusieurs, semaines Marius délira. Un vieillard lui rendait visite tous les jours mais Marius ne pensait qu'à Cosette. Un jour, son grand-père lui annonça que son mariage avec Cosette est prévu et que le vieillard qui lui rendait visite n'était qu'autre que Cosette. Une question que Marius se posait restait incompréhensible: qui l'avait ramené chez son grand-père? Il y avait dans ses habits du jour de la barricade un morceau de tissu qui avait été arraché. Le jour du mariage, Jean n'est pas là car il s'est blessé à la main mais en réalité, il fait croire cela pour ne pas devoir signer les papiers du mariage avec son passeport jaune. Le lendemain, il avoua à Marius qu'il était un ancien forçat. Il ne fallait pas qu'il le répète à Cosette pour ne pas gâcher son bonheur. Jean voyait sa fille tous les soirs depuis quelques semaines lorsqu'il ne vit plus. Marius reçut une lettre de Thénardier lui disant qu'il l'attendait et qu'il avait un grand secret à lui révéler. Marius alla à sa rencontre et Thénardier lui dit que Jean Valjean était un ancien forçat, qu'il avait tué Javert et un autre homme dans les égouts. Il lui montra aussi un morceau de tissu qui s'adaptait très bien aux vêtements de Marius. Il avait retrouvé son sauveur: c'était Jean Valjean. Marius et sa femme se précipitèrent chez Jean et celui-ci mourut quelques minutes après. Il fut enterré au cimetière Père-Lachaise.
