D�crit autour du soleil. Les trois plan�tes qui sui vent sont Mars, Iz�piter avec ses quatre lunes ou satellites; et Saturne avec cinq et de plus un anneau lumineux qui l'environne. Ces six pla n�tes principales ont �t� connues de tout temps. Une septi�me, d�couverte de nos jours, par le c�l�bre Han/ul, dont elle porte le nom est la plus �loign�e et se ment autour du soleil de la m�me mani�re que les six autres. Plus r�cemment encore, il vient de s'en montrer une nouvelle. Mais qui oseroit assurer, que c'est � ce nombre que se bornent les plan�tes de notre syst�me Parmi les plan�tes principales, nous n'en con noissons que trois qui aient des plan�tes secon daires, la Terre, Jupiter, et Saturne. Les satel lites font leur r�volution autour de la plan�te principale, centre de leur mouvement; pendant que celle - ci fait la sienne autour du soleil. Ainsi, le centre de mouvement des satellites change continuellement de place; puisque la plan�te � laquelle chacun d'eux est subordonn� l'entrain avec elle, en faisant sa r�volution autour du soleil. L'astre qui vivifie tout n0tre monde plan�taire, est plac� au centre de ce syst�me: et, sans qu'� notre vue il paroisse changer de lieu il tourne sur lui - m�me en vingt - cinq jours et demi. Au tour de lui, se meuvent dans des orbites oblou gues ou des ellipses les plan�tes qui sont sous sa A 2. L d�pendance. Mercure de tous ces globes le plus vorsm du soleil fait sa r�volution en quatre-vingt hu1t jours: mais, quoiqu'il soit �loign� de cet astre, de plus de treize millions de nos - lieues communes il est ordinairement cach� dans ses rayons et presque toujours 1nv1sible pour\nous. V�nus, �loign�e du soleil de vingt - quatre millions de lieues, d�crit une ellipse plus grande; et ach�ve son cours en un peu plus de deux cent vingt quatre jours. La Terre � trente-quatre millions de lieues du soleil a besoin de trois cent soixante cinq jours et quelques heures pour faire sa r�vo lution autour de lui; et, dans cette course an nuelle, elle est accompagn�e de la lune. Mars ach�ve son cours en six cent quatre vingt - sept jours et se trouve distant du soleil de cinquante nu millions de lieues. Jupiter et ses quatre lunes, qui en est �loign� de plus de cent soixante-seize millions a besoin de douze ans pou? Terminer le sien. Saturne, � plus de trois cent quatorze mil lions de lieues, fait, avec ses cinq satellites le tour du soleil, dans l'espace de trente ann�es. Outre le mouvement des plan�tes autour du soleil qui forme leur ann�e elles en ont un au tour d'ellez - m�mes qui forme leur mouvement diurne ou leur jour. Celui de V�nus est d'envi ron vingt - trois heures; celui de la Terre, d'un peu moins de vingt - quatre; celui de Mars d'un peu plus; celui de Jupiter, de pr�s de dix. L'� loignement de Saturne et la foiblesse de sa lu mi�re; la petitesse de Mercure, et sa grande proxi mit� du soleil ont emp�ch� d'v reconnoitre des taches, au moyen desquelles on puisse d�ter miner le temps de leur rotation. Cependant, on peut juger, par analogie, qu'ils tournent sur leur axe, comme les autres plan�tes.
