Les rois et les princes souverains d'autrefois, tel le duc de Lorraine, avaient le droit de punir et disposaient parallelement du pouvoir de pardonner, ce droit de grace dont ont herite les presidents des republiques modernes. A la fin du Moyen Age, pour manifester l'octroi de la grace, la coutume est de rediger un acte solennel, ecrit sur parchemin et scelle, qu'on appelle une lettre de remission, destine a notifier le pardon a son beneficiaire et aussi a en informer l'administration comme le public. Les lettres de remission des ducs de Lorraine sont conservees aux Archives departementales de Meurthe-et-Moselle depuis le regne de Rene II (1473-1508) sous forme de copies inserees dans des registres de la chancellerie ducale; les actes originaux malheureusement font defaut. La presente edition contient 321 documents issus de ces registres et seulement trois originaux retrouves; ils emanent pour la plupart du duc lui-meme, mais aussi de la duchesse (19); un seul provient de leur fils, Antoine. L'ensemble de ces lettres ne couvre pas toute la Lorraine actuelle, il manque evidemment les cites episcopales qui sont souveraines, mais aussi la Lorraine allemande qui devait posseder une chancellerie a part. Les difficultes du debut du regne de Rene II (guerres de Bourgogne, etc.) expliquent aussi l'inegale repartition chronologique, les deux-tiers des lettres se situant apres 1490. Outre la transcription des 324 textes rediges en moyen francais - mais sans particularisme linguistique regional manifeste - suivie d'un index des noms propres et d'un glossaire des mots medievaux, l'edition detaille la presentation des documents et leur contenu. La lettre de remission est une charte qui obeit a des regles diplomatiques; elle est dotee d'une titulature qui identifie l'auteur et precise ses titres et qualites, d'un expose qui decrit les faits et les motifs de la demande de remission, d'un dispositif qui contient la formule de grace assortie ou non de considerations generales et particulieres, d'un protocole final qui mentionne les differents personnages de l'administration et de l'entourage du duc qui l'ont aide a prendre la decision de gracier. Ce corpus de documents apporte des informations sur la criminalite et la delinquance en Lorraine a la fin du Moyen Age et fournit des details inappreciables sur les comportements sociaux et la vie quotidienne dans les petites villes et les villages a cette epoque. Il renseigne plus encore sur l'administration ducale, ses mecanismes et ses rouages ainsi que sur la formulation et la perception de l'ideologie du pouvoir absolu du prince, admirablement vehiculees par ce genre de document. L'edition des lettres de remission comble un vide dans la mise a disposition des chercheurs et du public de textes lorrains de la fin du Moyen Age. Elle a ete une uvre collective menee au sein de l'ARTEM (Atelier de Recherche sur les TExtes Medievaux), equipe de l'Universite Nancy2 associee au CNRS, qui a reuni des historiens, des linguistes et des philologues et dont le Centre de medievistique Jean-Schneider a pris la suite.
