1946. L'Europe emerge de la seconde guerre mondiale. L'Espagne s'est enfoncee dans la dictature catholique du General Franco. Marcel Bataillon, consacre cette annee-la son cours du College de France aux premiers jesuites d'Espagne. Inedit jusqu'a ce jour, le manuscrit de ce cours est un meteore. Ancre dans l'histoire sociale, politique, culturelle et spirituelle des marges du royaume de Castille, mais tout autant attache a des aventures individuelles, il mobilise toutes les ressources d'un grand historien et devance de plusieurs decennies les recherches actuelles sur la premiere reforme catholique dans la peninsule iberique, en soulignant par exemple l'ouverture, exceptionnelle et breve, de la jeune Compagnie de Jesus aux juifs convertis. Marcel Bataillon est un homme libre. Contre l'anticlericalisme de l'hispanisme francais de l'immediat apres-guerre, irrigue par l'exil republicain, il fait surgir une communaute de pretres-moines peu orthodoxes, et cependant bien catholiques. Contre la forteresse de l'historiographie catholique du Siecle d'Or, il lance cette meme petite troupe. Contre les certitudes des uns et des autres, il questionne, il interroge. A l'heure de la reconstruction d'un continent ravage par lui-meme, il met en avant l'urgence d'une attention toute particuliere a ces jesuites du XVIe siecle confrontes comme leurs contemporains a un double traumatisme: le grand schisme de la Reforme et la revelation d'un Nouveau Monde. Marcel Bataillon (1895-1977) occupa la chaire de Langues et litteratures de la peninsule Iberique et de l'Amerique latine au College de France. Son oeuvre, notamment sa these, Erasme et l'Espagne, recherches sur l'histoire spirituelle du XVIe siecle est reconnue comme un sommet dans l'histoire de l'hispanisme et reste aujourd'hui une reference indepassable. Gilles Bataillon, directeur d'etudes au Centre d'etudes mexicaines et centramericaines est le petit-fils de Marcel Bataillon. Pierre Antoine Fabre est directeur d'etudes a l'EHESS et directeur du Centre d'Anthropologie Religieuse Europeenne.
