On voyait passer à l'horizon-des silhouettes de navires noirs sur un fond d'or rouge, et je cherchais à reconnaître un bateau d'Étretat qui doit m'emmener dans quelques heures, -non à ses voiles brunes et tannées qu'on n'aurait pu distinguer à cette heure, où les couleurs s'effacent, -mais à la forme particulière de son beaupré incliné vers la mer. Après les couleurs, les formes commencèrent à disparaître.-Je vis s'allumer les lumières rouges des phares sur les jetées du Havre, -les lumières bleuâtres des étoiles au ciel-et les lumières presque vertes des lucioles dans l'herbe.-J'entendais le bruit de la mer qui montait, et je reconnaissais à son parfum une petite fleur jaune qui pousse à foison sur cette côte et qui embaume l'air. Et je pensai à un de vos anciens ouvrages, à un beau livre, -au Dernier jour d'un condamné, -dans lequel le malheureux qu'on juge, -en proie à une bizarre hallucination, -ne peut détourner ses regards et sa pensée d'une petite fleur jaune qui se balance sur une fenêtre où elle a été semée par le vent ou par quelque oiseau. Et je pensai à ces longues promenades que j'ai faites quelquefois avec vous sur les boulevards de Paris, -à l'heure où Paris dormait, -à ces promenades où nous parlions des magnificences de la nature, que vous aimiez comme moi, -et dont vous me parliez si bien. Et je songeai que ce jour-là vous étiez reçu membre de l'Académie française.-Vous voyez que je vous aime, Victor, puisque, sous de beaux arbres, à travers lesquels je voyais les étoiles comme des fruits de feu, Jean Baptiste Alphonse Karr, né à Paris le 24 novembre 1808 et mort à Saint-Raphaël le 30 septembre 1890, est un romancier et journaliste français. Biographie Alphonse est le fils du pianiste compositeur munichois Henri Karr. En 1832, à l'âge de 24 ans, il débute dans la littérature avec son roman le plus célèbre, Sous les tilleuls, qui lui valut son entrée au Figaro. En 1836, il participe à La Chronique de Paris, fondée par Honoré de Balzac, dont la parution ne durera que six mois, mais qui fut un joyeux intermède. Ami de Victor Hugo, il est un auteur dans la veine romantique. Son roman Histoire de Romain d'Étretat fait connaître Étretat, où il se rendait souvent. Par ses écrits et son réseau d'amis (des artistes, des romanciers...), il contribue aussi à la réputation de Trouville et d'Honfleur. On peut même le considérer comme l'"inventeur" d'une autre station balnéaire normande, celle de Sainte-Adresse près du Havre, dont il est le conseiller municipal de 1843 à 1849 et dont il fait le lieu de plusieurs romans. En 1840, au cours d'une visite au salon littéraire de Louise Colet, il fait allusion aux amours de la maîtresse de maison avec Victor Cousin, celle-ci furieuse lui plante dans le dos un coup de couteau de cuisine. Blessé sans gravité, il ne porte pas plainte mais exposa le couteau sur le mur de sa chambre du no 46 rue Vivienne avec cette inscription: Donné par Louise Colet...dans le dos.
