About the Book

  • Les Fâcheux est une comédie-ballet en trois actes et en vers de Molière, faite pour les divertissements de Louis XIV au mois d'août 1661. C'est la première comédie-ballet créée par Molière. La musique est de Lully, compositeur préféré du roi et les pas de danse sont de Pierre Beauchamps . En 1672, la pièce est reprise par La Comédie-Française avec la musique composée par Marc-Antoine Charpentier. Le poète Paul Pellisson en a écrit le prologue.
  • La première représentation est donnée le 17 août dans le parc du château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, par la troupe de Molière à l'occasion de la célèbre et fastueuse fête donnée par le surintendant Fouquet en l'honneur de Louis XIV. Elle est ensuite représentée en public à Paris le 4 novembre 1661, au Théâtre du Palais-Royal. La musique et les ballets sont de Pierre Beauchamp, les décors de Giacomo Torelli.
  • La pièce sera un succès et sera jouée 106 fois du vivant de Molière. Le roi lui-même, lisant le manuscrit de la pièce, pensa à un fâcheux que Molière n'avait pas représenté. Celui-ci, averti, modifia la pièce en conséquence; cet épisode inaugurera une recette à succès de Molière consistant à impliquer le roi dans le processus de création, ou du moins, à en donner l'impression à celui-ci, et surtout, attire l'attention du monarque sur le dramaturge.
  • Molière remplit ses trois actes d'un défilé de toutes sortes de fâcheux empêchant Éraste de parler à Orphise dont il est amoureux, et dont il obtiendra la main à la fin du 3e acte.
  • Éraste est un gentilhomme amoureux d'Orphise. Malheureusement le tuteur de la jeune fille, Damis, projette un mariage avec un autre prétendant. Eraste doit se rendre à un rendez-vous amoureux avec Orphise, mais une dizaine de fâcheux ne cessent de les importuner l'un et l'autre. Damis, ayant entendu qu'Éraste projette de venir dans la maison d'Orphise veut l'assassiner. Mais Damis est attaqué par les valets d'Éraste. Le jeune homme le défend vaillamment et obtient ainsi, après cet acte de courage, la main d'Orphise.
