La ville, la province, le peuple ne sont plus cantonnés au registre comique, les progrès de la Science aux manuels et aux essais des savants. L'individu s'affirme, en réaction à une évolution économique et sociale qui le dépasse ou l'écrase. Le culte du moi est de tous les genres littéraires. Le pessimisme se lit dans les oeuvres des écrivains qui refusent de se conformer à l'ordre établi. Ils ont le sentiment d'être incompris et se sentent coupés du monde, malgré l'espoir suscité par les progrès collectifs. Ce mal de vivre ou mal du siècle, chanté par Chateaubriand et les Romantiques comme Musset et Nerval, se prolonge avec le spleen de Baudelaire et, à la fin du siècle, chez les décadents et les symbolistes. Les romans réalistes n'y échappent pas non plus. Ainsi les courants littéraires s'entremêlent-ils plus qu'ils ne se succèdent, donnant lieu à des échanges féconds entre les écrivains. À ce titre, Baudelaire peut être considéré comme le poète capital, à la charnière du siècle comme des mouvements, romantique, réaliste, parnassien, décadent et symboliste.Thèmes: L'amour Il peut être heureux chez Baudelaire. Quand la femme devient muse, inspiratrice, source de beauté nouvelle et d'exotisme, le transport est réel. On devine les présences de trois femmes dans le livre: Jeanne Duval, métisse des îles Bourbon, amazone sensuelle avec laquelle Baudelaire vit une passion orageuse. Marie Daubrun, figure de l'idéal inaccessible, qui préfèrera à Baudelaire le poète Théodore de Banville. Apollonie Sabatier, figure angélique, qui montre à Baudelaire la voie d'un possible salut. Mais la femme peut aussi être dominatrice, faire souffrir. Elle est alors comparée au vampire, car elle prive le poète de son génie, en le détournant de la création. La misogynie de Baudelaire est prégnante et révélatrice de l'attraction-répulsion qu'il ressent à l'endroit de la femme, autre fleur du mal .Le voyageC'est un thème récurrent du livre. Baudelaire rêve d'un ailleurs exotique, passé ou futur, car il a une aversion pour l'ici et le présent. La quête d'un monde lointain, auquel on accède par le souvenir ou la rêverie, devient une échappatoire qui propulse le poète vers une trajectoire ascendante. Le vin Il permet à Baudelaire de sublimer la banalité du quotidien. L'ivresse devient l'occasion d'un voyage intérieur et d'une évasion. Le spleen Il traverse l'oeuvre entière de Baudelaire. En raison du titre oxymorique de la première section, Spleen et Idéal, du pantoum que forment les quatre poèmes, Spleen, et aussi de son autre grand livre, Petits poèmes en prose, le spleen de Paris, publié de manière posthume en 1869, le spleen doit être considéré comme le grand motif baudelairien. Le spleen signifie la rate en anglais, c'est-à-dire le siège de la bile noire, qu'Aristote appelait dans les Problemata, la mélancolie ou l'humeur noire . Depuis l'Antiquité, il existe une équivalence entre la mélancolie, le génie et la folie. Baudelaire marche donc sur les traces d'Aristote, auteur du chapitre 30 des Problemata, L'homme de génie et la mélancolie, en conférant au spleen des connotations très négatives renvoyant à l'angoisse, à l'apathie (absence de mouvement) et à l'aboulie (absence de volonté). L'Ennui est synonyme de Spleen dans le recueil et devient l'Ennemi contre lequel le poète lutte en vain.
