Résumé Les Fleurs du mal de Charles Baudelaire (1857) Au XIXe siècle, un monde nouveau envahit le champ littéraire, certains motifs se hissant pour la première fois au rang de sujets dignes d'intérêt. La ville, la province, le peuple ne sont plus cantonnés au registre comique, les progrès de la Science aux manuels et aux essais des savants. L'individu s'affirme, en réaction à une évolution économique et sociale qui le dépasse ou l'écrase. Le culte du moi est de tous les genres littéraires. Le pessimisme se lit dans les oeuvres des écrivains qui refusent de se conformer à l'ordre établi. Ils ont le sentiment d'être incompris et se sentent coupés du monde, malgré l'espoir suscité par les progrès collectifs. Ce mal de vivre ou mal du siècle, chanté par Chateaubriand et les Romantiques comme Musset et Nerval, se prolonge avec le spleen de Baudelaire et, à la fin du siècle, chez les décadents et les symbolistes. Les romans réalistes n'y échappent pas non plus. Ainsi les courants littéraires s'entremêlent-ils plus qu'ils ne se succèdent, donnant lieu à des échanges féconds entre les écrivains. À ce titre, Baudelaire peut être considéré comme le poète capital, à la charnière du siècle comme des mouvements, romantique, réaliste, parnassien, décadent et symboliste. Le 4 février 1857, Baudelaire remet son manuscrit à l'éditeur Auguste Poulet-Malassis associé à son beau-frère Eugène De Broise. Il y a là cent poèmes, le concentré de l'expérience poétique accumulée par l'auteur sur quinze années. La première publication, le sonnet À une dame créole, date de 1845 dans la revue L'Artiste. En octobre de la même année, le livre a été annoncé sous le titre Les Lesbiennes. Puis en novembre 1848, sous le titre Les Limbes. C'est finalement sous le titre des Fleurs du mal que paraissent en 1855, dans La Revue des Deux Mondes, dix-huit poèmes. De même que neuf autres poèmes, seront publiés en avril 1957 dans la Revue française. Le recueil définitif paraîtra le 23 juin 1857, après trois longs mois que Baudelaire consacre aux révisions sur épreuves. Le premier tirage (quelque 1000 exemplaires imprimés à Alençon) est mis en vente au prix de trois francs.
