En 1928, la découverte des statues, de grandeur nature, en terre cuite à Nok, au centre du Nigéria, a mené à la découverte de la plus ancienne civilisation Ouest-africaine connue. Elle avait existé de 900 ans av. J.-C. à 300 ans après J.-C. dont le cadre de vie de la nation de Cham, centré autour de Har Kwain. Les dernières fouilles dans cette région ont conduit à la conclusion de l'existence de fours utilisés pour l'extraction du minerai de fer dans les roches hématites dispersées sur une large zone. L'auteur, technologue experimenté se base sur l'existence connue de gisements de cassitérite, un minerai contenant de l'étain, et sur l'utilisation de grands fours pour cuire les statues pour lesquelles Nok est maintenant célèbre; l'auteur, en déduit que la nation de Cham avait découvert la technologie pour l'extraction du fer. Deux faits sont intéréssants de noter à cet égard. Tout d'abord, on a découvert dans cette région, des fours pour l'extraction du fer datant de 1400 à 1000 ans av. J.-C., ce qui indique que cette nation avait découvert l'âge du fer au moins 200 ans avant les Européens. Ensuite, bien que la nation de Cham savait comment extraire l'étain, ils ne pouvaient pas produire du bronze en raison de l'absence de cuivre dans la région. Il semble qu'ils sont passé directement de l'âge de pierre à l'âge de fer, des outils en pierre et en fer existant les uns à côté des autres. Les archéologues ont mis à jour des structures de pierre qui datent d'avant l'arrivée des Grecs, dont les temples et amphithéâtres qui survivent de nos jours.
