Il est de foi protestante comme les siens et reçoit une éducation chrétienne soignée pasteur méthodiste il laisse le souvenir d'un grand prédicateur. La foi chrétienne, les mystères de l'infini, l'homme pécheur qui ne peut se racheter que par le sacrifice de la souffrance seront les thèmes dominant de son oeuvre.Il débute ses études primaires dans une petite école de quartier tenue par son père et un moine défroqué Léon ponce. Le père est bon et sévère a la fois il lui inculque le devoir de la perfection. Toutes ses qualités l'accompagneront dans la vie et seront l'estampille de toute son oeuvre poétique.Ses parents ne sont pas aises. Dans ses notes autobiographiques il confesse sans complexe ni fausse honte: Mes parents n'ayant guère de ressources a cette époque. J'allais faire dehors, leurs commissions: le samedi je balayais et lavais la salle d'école: je rapportais de chez la repasseuse le linge; j'achetais quelque fois aussi nos provisions au marche. LES DIX HOMMES NOIRS/ETZER VILAIREA quatorze ans. Il bénéficie d'une bourse d'études, a port au prince.au petit Séminaire Collège St Martial. Il y entre en quatrième secondaire Deux ans plus tard, il revient à Jérémie ou il continue à se cultiver. Comme la plupart des intellectuels Haïtiens de l'époque. Il est un autodidacte applique et exemplaire il fait ses débuts comme instituteur a un collège de jeunes Filles. Parallèlement, il étudie le droit et rime avec passion. En 1904 il est nomme Commissaire du Gouvernement près le tribunal Civil de Jérémie et en 1905 Directeur du lycée National de la ville.En 1898, il est déjà connu et apprécie dans le monde littéraire Haïtien. Il collabore aux revues et journaux de l'époque s'éditant à la capitale. En 1901.Georges Sylvain. En tournée de conférences a Jérémie. Découvre ses aptitudes et capacités. Enthousiasme il l'encourage à publier son premier recueil de vers. Deux longs textes: Pages d'amours et les Dix Hommes Noirs...Le recueil est salue par la critique comme une éclatante réussite. Surtout le deuxième texte considéré alors comme le cri de conscience d'une génération.Ce succès incite le poète a publie en 1903 Le flibustier. En 1907 Années Tendres et Poèmes de la mort.L'audience et le prestige grandissant de vilaire franchissent nos frontières .En 1912 Les nouveaux poèmes patronne par l'académie française. Il voyage en France pour recevoir le Prix.En 1914, 1916, 1919, ses oeuvres complètes sont publiées en trois formes par une maison d'éditions parisienne toujours par les soins de Georges Barral En 1915, c'est l'occupation américaine.Comme les ....
