About the Book

Les Deux Canards, ce sont deux petits journaux ennemis, créés en vue d'une campagne électorale. Venu dans la petite ville de Valmoutiers pour y retrouver Madeleine, la jolie fille du baron de Saint-Amour, avec laquelle il a dansé le tango, Montillac s'est laissé détourner de ce flirt par Léontine, l'exubérante épouse de l'imprimeur Béjun. Il devient sous le nom de Gélidon, le rédacteur en chef du canard radical, la Torche, qu'édite Béjun. La Torche doit servir les ambitions de la femme de Béjun qui veut faire de son mari le prochain maire de Valmoutiers. Il doit affronter le baron de Saint-Amour, chef du parti réactionnaire. Le baron de Saint-Amour achète le journal ennemi. Toute la rédaction suit le nouveau patron et se conforme à sa nouvelle politique, même Gélidon qui a retrouvé Madeleine et a senti se réveiller son amour pour elle. Mais Mme Béjun contre-attaque en fondant un autre organe, le Phare qui, lui, paraîtra le soir et auquel contribue également Gélidon. Montillac passe ses journées auprès de Madeleine, et écrit les articles de la Torche. Gélidon consacre ses nuits à Léontine et rédige les articles du Phare. La situation se tend entre les deux organes de presse et aboutit à un duel: Montillac et Gélidon doivent se rencontrer sur le terrain. Les témoins les prennent tour à tour l'un pour l'autre, et des amis se substituent à eux, à l'aide de lunettes d'automobile qui cachent leur visage. Au lieu de deux combattants, il y a bientôt trois adversaires en présence... Entre vaudeville et comédie de caractères, Tristan Bernard et Alfred Athis ont créé avec "Les Deux Canards" une pièce satirique réjouissante, qui a connu un très vif succès, tant public que critique, lors de sa création en 1913. Pour 10 à 18 comédiens et comédiennes.
