Après l'armistice de 1945 et leur retour en France, leurs vies à reconstruire, semées de drames et d'obstacles, mais aussi de belles rencontres qui vont bouleverser leur existence.Une saga sentimentale avec des personnages propres à émouvoir, faire rêver, pleurer mais aussi trembler, un récit doté d'une réelle valeur historique, pimenté de scènes sensuelles, construit pour tenir le lecteur en haleine. Les principaux personnages de la saga: Philippe Destivel, dit Phil né en 1904, est le personnage principal de ce livre. Bel homme, cultivé, audacieux et patriote, il sait garder son calme dans les pires moments. Brillant officier d'aviation, à la tête d'un groupe de bombardiers lourds, au Maroc puis en Angleterre, il est capitaine au début du récit. Veuf depuis 1937, il a deux enfants à élever. Sa mère Maggy, veuve également, l'aide au quotidien mais souvent l'exaspère et il est ravi de retrouver sa liberté quand il part seul en Angleterre, prêt à toutes les aventures. Maggy Destivel, née en 1874, d'origine paysanne, est une femme enjouée, dynamique et sociable mais qui ne réfléchit pas toujours suffisamment avant d'agir. En adoration devant son fils, elle est fière de sa réussite professionnelle. Un solide fond d'autoritarisme la pousse à se mêler sans vergogne de ses affaires de coeur. Même âgée, Maggy sait encore apprécier les plaisirs de la chair. Victoria Miller, née en 1909, est une séduisante anglaise, fortunée, mystérieuse, cloitrée à Gaitford, pour des raisons qu'elle a du mal à révéler. Elle trouve un dérivatif à sa triste vie dans la peinture qu'elle pratique avec succès. John Luxley, né en 1916, est un jeune mathématicien anglais de l'Université d'Oxford. Formé au pilotage de bombardier au début de la guerre, il a été décoré pour ses exploits. Il passe malgré tout par des périodes d'angoisse, avec des nuits peuplées de cauchemars, car ses missions sur l'Allemagne l'ont traumatisé. John souffre de solitude affective et aimerait trouver une compagne. Françoise Dumaine, née en 1913, a perdu son mari en 1943, deux semaines après avoir accouché de son troisième enfant. Arrivée en Algérie au début des hostilités, elle fuit ce pays après les massacres de Sétif, pour retourner vivre en France dans un village en Bourgogne, où elle possède une vaste propriété. Mais habiter à l'année dans un petit village ne correspond pas à son idéal de vie. Wilhelm Steimer, né en 1916, est de père allemand mais de mère américaine. Il est sergent dans la Wehrmacht. A la fin des hostilités, il déserte pour échapper aux troupes russes et tenter un périple destiné à lui faire retrouver la personne qu'il aime. Un récit où le suspense est toujours présent et qui fait voyager le lecteur au Maroc et en Angleterre puis en Allemagne, en France et en Russie.
