Paul Féval est un écrivain français, né le 29 septembre 1816 à Rennes, et mort le 7 mars 1887 à Paris 7e. Son oeuvre prolifique, composée de plus de 70 romans populaires édités en feuilleton et de près de 70 nouvelles en plus de "au moins une trentaine de pièces de théâtre, d'études historiques, de brochures chrétiennes, de pamphlets", eut un succès considérable de son vivant, égalant celles d'Honoré de Balzac et d'Alexandre Dumas.Charles Constant Albert Nicolas d'Arnoux de Limoges Saint-Saëns dit Bertall, né le 18 décembre 1820 à Paris et mort le 24 mars 1882 à Soyons, est un illustrateur, caricaturiste et graveur français.Connu également sous le nom Tortu-Goth, il est considéré comme l'un des illustrateurs les plus féconds du XIXe siècle et compte parmi les pionniers de la photographie.Extrait: Les vieilles gens de la paroisse de Cournon savent de belles histoires de revenants qu'ils content aux veillées d'été, dans la grange de M. le recteur, - aux veillées d'hiver, sous le vaste manteau de la cheminée d'une ferme, en faisant rôtir des châtaignes sous la cendre, pour les manger ensuite, arrosées de bon cidre. Le héros de Cournon, l'homme dont les conteurs de veillées aiment surtout à rappeler les hauts faits, se nommait Janet Legoff. Il était connu de ses amis, et davantage de ses ennemis sous le nom du Petit Gars. Sur ce chapitre, les bardes de la vallée de l'Oust ne tarissent point: on ferait une épopée avec leurs récits; mais nous nous bornerons pour aujourd'hui à une simple anecdote, en demandant pardon au Petit Gars d'en user ainsi avec sa gloire. Vers la fin de l'année 1790, Armand de Thélouars, capitaine aux gardes françaises, épousa par amour Henrietle-Élise de Lanno-Carhoët, nièce de M. de Carhoët, baron de Saulnes, qui s'en était allé mourir en Amérique pour défendre les marchands du nouveau monde contre les marchands de l'ancien: bataille où, par parenthèse, une noble épée comme la sienne n'avait que faire; mais c'était la mode alors, et cette guerre, à tout prendre, devait immortaliser le cheval blanc de M. de Lafayette.
