Quand on lit Aristote dans son texte, on est frappe par la frequence du retour d'expressions comme la science de la chose , a partir de la chose elle-meme , dans la nature de la chose ; les physiciens presocratiques n'ont pu deviner l'essence, dit Aristote, que parce qu'ils ont ete pousses par la chose elle-meme . Si ce retour insistant ne se manifeste pas toujours dans la version francaise du texte, c'est parce que le terme grec de pragma recueille en lui tout un faisceau de sens que la traduction fait eclater en termes distincts: pragma se traduit par chose, mais aussi par cause, au sens juridique du terme, et par affaire. pragma recouvre donc le champ des choses naturelles, mais aussi celui de la politique; qui est l'affaire de tous et la cause d'un chacun, et que les Anciens nommaient affaires communes et chose publique . Ce sens anthropologique s'est oblitere de nos jours, si bien que la signification de pragma est beaucoup plus large que celle du vocable moderne de chose. La largeur du champ de pragma invite a faire porter l'analyse sur l'ensemble de l'oeuvre d'Aristote. Sous son aspect negatif d'abord, avec la critique de la sophistique et du platonisme; sous son aspect positif ensuite, tel qu'il se deploie en trois perspectives essentielles: la relation de l'homme aux choses par la connaissance; la nature propre de la chose concrete telle qu'elle subsiste par soi dans la nature; la realite politique, qui certes est l'oeuvre de l'homme, mais qui aussi subsiste a l'exterieur de lui dans la Cite d'une maniere autonome comme re-publique. On sait que les textes publies par le Stagirite ont ete perdus, et que le Corpus est constitue de notes de cours redigees a des epoques differentes. C'est dire que le philosophe meditant les ecrits d'Aristote ne peut faire l'economie de considerations philologiques, lesquelles ne sont pas ici surcharge erudite mais font corps avec l'interpretation. Ainsi, l'etude precise de l'evolution d'Aristote dans sa theorie du sentir eclaire la genese du traite De l'ame et invite a reconsiderer le probleme de la date de sa redaction. On resume souvent par le mot de realisme l'inspiration de la pensee d'Aristote, realisme naif ajoutent certains naifs pour designer une pensee parfaitement au fait de ses presupposes. Mais si le realisme se definit comme visee du reel, il se trouve affecte d'une enorme ambiguite puisque la realite est ce que tente d'exprimer toute philosophie. Une inspiration philosophique va donc se caracteriser par le lieu particulier ou elle invente de situer ce reel enigmatique; si Aristote ramene la philosophie du ciel sur la terre c'est parce que, refusant de voir ce reel dans un monde ideal separe, il veut lire l'essence dans les choses de ce monde, les p ata. Le recours ici fait, a travers la pensee d'Aristote, au sens ancien de ... vise a revaloriser la notion de chose, a lui redonner l'ampleur qu'elle a perdue en se bornant a designer de nos jours l'objet simplement inerte.
