About the Author: Louis-Henri Boussenard, né à Escrennes le 4 octobre 1847 et mort à Orléans le 11 septembre 1910, est un écrivain français, auteur de romans d'aventure. Surnommé de son vivant le Rider Haggard français, il est plus connu aujourd'hui en Europe de l'Est, où quarante volumes de ses oeuvres furent publiés dans la Russie impériale en 1911, que dans les pays francophones. Biographie; Après des études de médecine, il se consacre à l'écriture. Le gouvernement lui ayant confié une mission scientifique en Guyane, il voyage beaucoup dans les colonies françaises, surtout en Afrique. Lors de la guerre de 1870, il est vite blessé par les Prussiens, expérience amère capable d'expliquer un incontestable sentiment nationaliste qui se rencontre dans plusieurs de ses romans. Quelques-uns de ses livres portent la marque de préjugés contre les Britanniques, ce qui explique sans doute qu'il ait été peu traduit et soit peu connu dans le monde anglophone. Ses contes et nouvelles paraissent dans de nombreux journaux tels que Le Figaro et Le Petit Parisien. Un premier roman, Le Tour du monde d'un gamin de Paris, connaît un grand succès populaire, prépublié en feuilleton en 1879 dans le Journal des voyages. Entre deux voyages, il revient au pays natal où il écrit romans sur romans, la plupart paraissant en feuilletons avant d'être édités en librairie. Il promène ses héros à travers le monde; il les expose à tous les périls, mais fait toujours en sorte que le bon triomphe et que le méchant soit puni: le succès est considérable. Fervent républicain, il témoigne dans ses écrits d'une vision nationaliste farouchement anti-allemande, anti-anglaise (ce qui explique qu'il n'ait pas été publié dans les pays anglo-saxons) et colonialiste. Le fait que Boussenard ait fait son service militaire pendant la guerre de 1870, où il fut blessé, explique que tous les ennemis dans ses récits soient des Allemands
