About the Book

Louis-Édouard Pollet, alias Michel Corday, né à Paris le 12 septembre 1869 et mort le 12 janvier 1937 à Serbonnes (Yonne), est un romancier français. Biographie Il fut d'abord élève de l'École polytechnique; il quitta cette dernière pour l'école de Fontainebleau, en 1890. Il reçut les grades de sous-lieutenant, puis de lieutenant du génie, en garnison à Versailles. Il démissionna de l'armée en 1894 pour se consacrer à l'écriture . Ses débuts littéraires furent heureux et productifs, d'abord dans le journal Gil Blas, puis au Gaulois, au Journal, à la Vie Parisienne, où il écrit une série plaisante et de curieuses études sur la vie des officiers en caserne; ces écrits furent plus tard, réunies en volumes. Dès lors commença vraiment sa carrière littéraire avec une série de romans: Mariés jeunes!, en 1896, puis avec Confession d'un enfant du siège, dont le titre parodie celui du fameux roman de Musset, en 1897. Il fonde Le Lys Rouge, groupement des admirateurs d'Anatole France, en 1932 . Il possédait, à Serbonnes, une maison de campagne, dans laquelle il vivait de grandes périodes de l'année. Il y mourut et il fut inhumé, en forêt, sur le terroir de Serbonnes EXTRAIT I LE CHOIX D'UN MARI Popette se planta devant moi et, décisive: -Cher ami, je veux épouser un aviateur. Une flamme aux joues, une larme aux yeux, Popette répétait d'une voix ardente et rapide: -Je veux épouser un aviateur. Un vague cousinage et une vraie sympathie m'unissent à Popette. Elle a vingt-quatre ans. Son père, un céramiste de valeur mort prématurément, a laissé aux siens une solide aisance. Grandie en plein milieu artiste, Popette mène une libre existence. Tantôt on la rencontre suivie de loin par une maman spirituelle et débonnaire qui s'essouffle, lève des bras courts, soupire: Oh! cette enfant! et s'assoit. Tantôt elle est chaperonnée par son jeune frère Loulou, dont les douze ans se dépensent en galopades de poulain échappé. Saine et pure, Popette a toutes les audaces de l'ignorance. Ses dehors délurés enveloppent une petite âme de romance. Elle s'exprime avec une volubilité dont elle cherche vainement à se guérir. Elle a bien essayé de sucer des cailloux. Mais elle les avale. Sa beauté gamine a la frappe nette d'une monnaie neuve. Popette est de petite taille et s'en félicite: -Une petite femme, dit-elle, ça doit être plus facile à prendre dans ses bras qu'une grande. Depuis qu'elle a l'âge du mariage, Popette le déclare à tout venant: elle n'épousera que l'homme qui saura lui plaire. Elle l'espère et l'attend sans impatience apparente. Jusqu'ici, je ne lui ai connu que des emballements sans consistance ni durée, qu'elle appelle négligemment des amitiés tendres. Mais, cette fois, elle paraît bien décidée à fixer son choix.
