Außerdem geht es um die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen entdeckenden Lernens und wie bei der Unterrichtsplanung Schülerorientierung verwirklicht und das pädagogische Paradox gelöst werden kann. Aufgabe der Grundschule und somit auch des Sachunterrichts ist es, einen effizienten Wissenstransfer und eine wirkungsvolle Entwicklungsförderung zu verwirklichen. Dabei steht vor allem die Interaktion zwischen aktivem Lehren und Lernen im Vordergrund. Doch gerade hinsichtlich dieser Interaktion treten einige Probleme auf, die es zu bewältigen gilt. Vor allem die Probleme bei der Entwicklungsförderung (Lerntätigkeit im Unterricht) treten hierbei in den Vordergrund. Die Lernprobleme im Sachunterricht bestehen größtenteils in der fehlenden Handlungsorientierung, sowie auch in den Rückständen der kognitiven Entwicklungsförderung (Problemlösen, Begriffsbildung, begriffliches/vernetztes Denken etc.). Bei der Handlungsorientierung liegt die Betonung auf die Handlung an sich, nicht jede Art einer Aktivität des Kindes bedeutet gleich, dass man einen handlungsorientierten Unterricht führt. Die Orientierung begrenzt sich auf das Handlungsergebnis. "Mit Handlung in diesem Sinne ist gemeint, dass es sich nicht um Lernen handelt, bei dem bloße materielle Handlungsvollzüge notwendig sind, sondern um bewusste auf Ziele und Zwecke orientierte planvolle Lernaktivitäten, die praktisch-konstruktives Handeln, zielorientiertes Handeln, kommunikatives Handeln, ästhetisches Handeln, spielerisches Handeln und dramaturgisches Handeln umfassen."
