Dabei ist nach der Lern- und Hirnforschung erst emotional freudvoll aufgeladenes Lernen nachhaltig. Zudem halten es laut der Studie "Lernen mit Spaß" von SOCOYO und ZEIT LEO 99 % der befragten Eltern für sehr wichtig, dass ihren Kindern das Lernen Spaß macht. Während nach der Studie 6-jährige am Lernen noch zu 53 % Spaß empfinden, liegt bei 13-jährigen die Zahl nur noch bei 6 %. In dieser Arbeit geht es um das Lernverständnis von Sudbury Valley Schulen. Neben der Frage, wie Lernen an Sudbury-Schulen aufgefasst und gestaltet wird, folgt diese Arbeit der Forschungsfrage, inwiefern die Erkenntnisse der Neurowissenschaften über das Lernen, das Lernkonzept von Sudbury-Schulen stützen. Da die Neurowissenschaften durch die Erforschung des Gehirns u.a. die Natur menschlichen Lernens offenlegen, kann daran überprüft werden, ob sich das freie, natürliche Lernen an Sudbury-Schulen rechtfertigen lässt. Um dies zu verifizieren, werden nach ersten theoretischen Grundlagen in Kapitel drei zuerst das Lernverständnis der Neurowissenschaften und in Kapitel vier dasjenige von Sudbury-Schulen erläutert. Im darauffolgenden Ergebnisteil (Kapitel fünf) werden die beiden Lernverständnisse in Beziehung gesetzt. Hierbei wird geprüft, ob die Erkenntnisse der Neurowissenschaften das Lernkonzept der Sudbury-Schulen bestätigen und in welcher Hinsicht kritische Aspekte identifiziert werden können. Daraufhin werden in der Diskussion die Resultate evaluiert und ihre Einschränkungen erläutert. Zuletzt rundet das Fazit in Kapitel sieben die Arbeit mit der Beantwortung der Forschungsfrage ab.
