Es ist eine Form des offenen Unterrichts, die besonders individuell und flexibel auf eine Klasse oder den Unterrichtsstoff zugeschnitten werden kann. Der Lehrer hat dabei die Möglichkeit, vielfältige Ideen und Varianten für die Übermittlung eines Themas zum Einsatz zu bringen. Noch fehlt es an wissenschaftlichen Studien, doch inzwischen sprechen sich praktizierende Lehrer aus eigener Erfahrung für den positiven Einfluss des Stationenlernens auf die sozialen Eigenschaften und die Lernbereitschaft der Schüler aus. Welche Kriterien sind bei der richtigen Umsetzung des offenen Unterrichts zu beachten? Neben der Erweiterung und Vertiefung des Kenntnisstandes eines Schülers, sollte auch dessen Kompetenz im sozialen Bereich gefördert werden. Das betrifft beispielsweise die Realisierung der Eigenverantwortung. Der Schüler erkennt, dass er selbst seinen Wissenstand beeinflussen kann. Er sollte dazu natürlich alle Möglichkeiten bereit gestellt bekommen. Durch die veränderte Unterrichtssituation steigert sich meist die Motivation des Schülers von allein, denn er fühlt sich in seiner Person ernst genommen, was einerseits die Selbstständigkeit und die individuelle Lösung einer Aufgabe zur Folge hat. Andererseits wird dem Schüler oft frei gestellt, in welcher sozialen Umgebung er sich der Aufgabenstellung widmet. Er kann sich dabei zwischen der Gruppen-, Partner- oder Einzelarbeit entscheiden. Im darauf folgenden Arbeitsprozess kommt es dann unweigerlich zur Konfrontation mit sozialen Herausforderungen, die der Schüler meistern muss, um der Aufgabenlösung näher zu rücken.
