In allen Gesellschaften bilden die Wissenschaft und die Vermittlung von Wissen das Fundament. Während die Wissenschaft als Ausgangspunkt und Triebfeder gesellschaftlichen Wandels wahrgenommen wird, bewirkt die Archivierung des jeweils verfügbaren Wissensbestandes und die von Generation zu Generation erfolgende Weitergabe dieses Wissens, dass einmal errungene Kenntnisse, Techniken, Erklärungsmodelle und sogar ganze Weltbilder erhalten werden, sodass nachfolgende Generationen diese nicht immer wieder aufs Neue erlernen, erforschen, erproben und entwickeln müssen. Aufgrund dieser Tatsache könnte man eigentlich alle Gesellschaften als Wissensgesellschaften bezeichnen und dennoch hat der Begriff seit den 1990er Jahren einen noch nie dagewesenen Bekanntheitsgrad erreicht, der sich nur durch einen Wandel der Bedeutung von Wissen erklären lässt, wie er in den letzten Jahrzehnten des 20. Jahrhunderts beobachtet worden ist. Zweifellos hat sich in der jüngsten Vergangenheit der Umfang, die Komplexität und die Innovationsdynamik der gesellschaftlich verfügbaren Informationen dramatisch erhöht und wird sich auch immer weiter erhöhen, sodass es zu permanenten Veränderungen und Neuerungen in allen Bereichen kommt, die wi derum immer neue Herausforderungen und Anforderungen an die Individuen stellen. Immer schnellere technische, ökonomische und gesellschaftliche Veränderungsprozesse führen zu immer höheren und neuen Qualifikationsanforderungen und stellen damit hohe Anforderungen an Orientierungen und Perspektiven, um eben diesem Wandel gerecht zu werde
