L'ENFER CHAPITRE I LE FOYER DU COLON Ce jour-la Toronto, la capitale du Haut-Canada; etait froid, monotone et melancolique. Epaisse aussi, bien epaisse etait la neige sur les larges et tristes voies passageres. Dans les rues desertes, comme dans la campagne, a travers les arbres, au faite des edifices, et loin, fort loin sur la baie silencieuse, ce n'etait que neige!-neige ici, neige la, neige partout. Du nord s'elancait une bise piquante qui balayait les plaines, balayait la ville et balayait le lac; de lourds nuages noirs marchaient peniblement au ciel, et ils etaient tout charges de neige, encore de la neige. Le vent les chassait lentement en gemissant, d'un ton lugubre, le long des arteres de la cite. Chacun, chaque chose avait cet aspect triste qu'une journee aussi sombre, aussi glaciale pouvait evoquer. Les maisons elles-memes avaient l'air ennuye et mal a l'aise. Il semblait qu'elles regardassent avec humeur les rues solitaires et se serrassent les unes contre les autres en tremblotant et se plaignant comme de veritables mortelles. Les fenetres aussi etaient delaissees et n'annoncaient que trop combien peu on s'amusait dans les appartements qu'elles eclairaient. Les quelques traineaux dont, de temps en temps, tintaient les clochettes a travers l'air froid et humide remplissaient d'une sensation desagreable par leurs sons discords et criards. Les pietons qui cheminaient sur les trottoirs etaient enveloppes jusqu'a mi-visage dans des fourrures et chausses de mocassins. Ce qu'on apercevait de leur face etait bleui par la vivacite de l'atmosphere, et ils se heurtaient gauchement, s'il arrivait qu'ils se rencontrassent le long de l'etroite piste. On aurait dit que tous etaient dehors contre leur gre, et qu'ils se hataient de rentrer chez eux, a l'exception de quelques individus de taille malingre, courbes, a moitie couverts contre les rigueurs de la saison, et qui se tenaient au coin des rues, regardant d'un oeil d'envie, tantot les magasins, tantot les gens confortablement vetus qui les coudoyaient en passant. Les traits des pauvres malheureux portaient imprimee en caracteres eloquents cette silencieuse requete: Oh! il fait bien sombre et bien froid; vous avez une chaude maison pour vous abriter, vous; mais nous n'en avons pas, ou si nous en avons une, le vent y filtre partout, la neige s'y glisse et la pauvrete a laisse eteindre le feu dans l'atre. Si l'on se sentait mal et chagrin au coeur de la ville, au sein meme du luxe et de la richesse de la populeuse cite, a plus forte raison il en etait ainsi dans les faubourgs, sur les mornes marecages ou de chetives habitations maigrement distribuees percaient a peine les bancs de neige que la tourmente y avait entasses.... Henri-Emile Chevalier, ne le 13 septembre 1828 a Chatillon-sur-Seine, mort le 26 aout 1879 a Paris, est un homme de lettres francais. Ayant porte les armes, Chevalier dut s'exiler a la suite du coup d'Etat du 2 decembre 1851, et sejourna en cette qualite aux Etats-Unis, ou il a donne des feuilletons dans le Courrier des Etats-Unis, a Montreal ou il a ecrit dans des journaux democratiques et occupe le poste de bibliothecaire de l'Institut Canadien."
