Leistungsorientierte Vergütungssysteme sollen die Leistungsmotivation und die Arbeitszufriedenheit über die vertraglich geschuldete Arbeit hinaus fördern, um dadurch insgesamt die Unternehmensziele zu erreichen und den Unternehmenserfolg zu steigern. Ob diese Systeme tatsächlich erfolgreich sind, ist umstritten. Die Motivationsforschung sieht diesem Trend eher skeptisch entgegen. Leistungsorientierte Vergütungssysteme haben nicht nur Effekte, die sich positiv auf die Motivation auswirken, der Einsatz dieser Systeme kann auch die Motivation und Leistung, und damit auch das Unternehmensergebnis, mindern.
