Wir leben also in einer Leistungsge-sellschaft, die von der Schule erwartet, die Leistung eines jeden Schülers zu bewerten. Damit ist der Begriff Leistung aber noch nicht inhaltlich gefüllt. Was ist Leistung überhaupt? Nach dem gängigen Verständnis enthält Schulleistung drei Komponenten, die sich im Folgenden als Gleichung präsentieren: Leistung = Kenntnisse + Fähigkeit + Anstrengung1 Diese Formel greift zu kurz, weil sie sich überwiegend auf den kognitiven Bereich verengt und Leistung zu sehr personalisiert. Dabei gibt es viele Faktoren, wie zum Beispiel das soziale Umfeld des Schülers, die Tagesform, Antipathie oder Sympathie des bewertenden Lehrers, die großen Einfluss auf die Leistung (beziehungsweise die Bewertung der Leistung) haben. Die Begriffe Leistungsmessung und Leistungsbewertung werden oft zusammen genannt, wobei auf eine klare begriffliche Trennung verzichtet wird. Dabei besteht eine klare Unterscheidung. Bei der Zensierung von Schülerleistungen gehen die Tätigkeiten Messen und Bewerten oft nahtlos ineinander über, ohne dass sich Lehrer dessen wirklich bewusst sind. Aber wo liegt der Unterschied zwischen Leistungsmessung und Leistungsbewertung? Die Antwort lautet: die Bezugssysteme sind verschieden. Wenn die Lehrkraft in einem Diktat Fehler anstreicht und auszählt, dann ist dies ein Akt der Leistungsmessung, für den ein relativ eindeutiger Maßstab (die Konventionen der deutschen Rechtschreibung) vorliegt.
