Diese komplizierten Gefühle brachte Goethe einer ganzen Generation nahe. Schriftsteller wie Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz und Goethes Freund Friedrich Schiller wollten danach über solche Gefühle schreiben. Deshalb nannte man die ganze literarische Epoche "Sturm und Drang".

"Werthers Leiden" wurde einer der erfolgreichsten Romane der deutschen Literatur. Werther wurde eine berühmte Figur. Es gab Werther-Tassen, Werther-Kaffeegeschirr und sogar ein Werther-Parfum. Junge Fans in der ganzen Welt lasen den Roman und kleideten sich wie Werther. Angeblich löste "Werther" bei jungen Menschen auch eine Selbstmord-Welle aus.
