Der Milzbrandbacillus (bacillus Anthracis) ist der historisch ruhmreichste Vertreter der pathogenen Bacterien. Seine Auffindung er�ffnete die Reihe der fundamentalen Entdeckungen auf dem Ge biete der modernen Lehre von den bacteriellen Infectionsorganis men. Auf dem festen Grunde dieser Entdeckung durfte die Lehre unersch�ttert ruhen, auch als sp�ter nicht wenige, voreilig in das Geb�ude hineingetragene Bausteine; manche stolz aufgerichtete S�ule wieder entfernt werden mussten. Mit eherner Sicherheit be hauptete unser Bacillus allen Angriffen gegen�ber seinen Platz, ja nicht nur das, neubefestigt in seiner Bedeutung, immer unver werflichere Zeugnisse seiner eminenten pathogenen Gewalt auf weisend, ging er aus dem Kampfe hervor. Von Bayer 1) Pollender2) (1855) und Brauell3) (1857) entdeckt, wurde er zun�chst, da er keine Beweglichkeit zeigte, von Zweiflern als leb loser Krystall erkl�rt. Musste er sich, bei der damaligen nuvoll kommenen Kenntniss der Bacterienmorphologie eine Zeit lang diese Missdeutung gefallen lassen, so bewiesen doch die, in der Ein leitung (p. 8 u. 9) erw�hnten Experimente von Davaine, sowie von Klebs und Tiegel, dass an seine Gegenwart die Ansteckungsf�higkeit der Milzbrandstoffe unbedingt gebunden sei. Die Zweifel an seiner bacteriellen Natur wurden dann endg�ltig durch die gl�nzenden, eine Etappe auf dem Wege der modernen Bacten'en lehre bezeichnenden Forschungen von Koch4) niedergeschlagen, welcher das Auswachsen der St�bchen zu langen F�den, die Bil dung endogener Sporenbildung in letzteren, das Freiwerden der Sporen und deren Auskeimung zu neuen St�bchen direct beob achtete, womit der Milzbrandbacillus in die Reihe der botanisch bestgekannten Bacterienarten erhoben war. Und als trotz der Arbeiten Davaine's, Klebs', und Pasteur's) immer von Neuem unserem Bacillus die specifisch-pathogene Be deutung bestritten und ihm ein selbst�ndiges, d. H. Nicht erst durch die prohferirenden Milzbrandbacillen im inficirten Organis mus erzeugtes, chemisches Agens, das, Anthracin' als das eigent liche wirksame Princip der Milzbrandseuche gegen�ber gestellt wurde Osols), da zeigte wiederum Koch dass die Entwicklung der Milzbrandkrankheit untrennbar zusammen h�ngt mit dem Leben und der Entwicklung der Milzbrand bacillen, dass nur solche Milzbrandsubstanzen, welche entwick lungsf�hige Bacillen oder Sporen des Bacillus Anthracis enthalten, Milzbrand zu erzeugen vermogen und dass schliesslich die aus ihren naturlichen Substraten durch k�nstliche Beincultur isolirten Milzbrandbacillen noch nach hundert und mehrfacher Umziichtung ebenso sicher und typisch milzbranderzeugend wirken, wie die ur spr�nglichen, dem erkrankten Thiere entnonnnenen Materialien, wodurch dem Anthrax - Bacillus wohl fiir alle Zeiten der Sieg �ber das hypothetische chemische Anthraxvirus gesichert war. Nach alledem wird es gerechtfertigt erscheinen, wenn wir unsere Vorlesung �ber die pathogenen Bacillen mit der Besprechung des Milzbrandbacillus beginnen.
