Als erster Dalai Lama steht dGe 'dun grub am Anfang der bekanntesten Reinkarnationslinie innerhalb des tibetischen Buddhismus. Seit dem funften Dalai Lama Ngag dbang Blo bzang rgya mtsho (1617 1682) sind die Nachfolger des dGe 'dun grub das politische und geistige Oberhaupt Tibets und gehoren zu den wichtigsten geistigen Fuhrern der Welt. Als einer der bedeutendsten Schuler des grossen tibetischen Reformers bTsong kha pa Blo bzang grags pa (1357 1419) und als Grunder des beruhmten Klosters bKra shis lhun po, des ersten und wichtigsten dGe lugs pa-Klosters in der zentraltibetischen Provinz gTsang, erwarb sich dGe 'dun grub unvergangliche Verdienste um die junge und aufstrebende dGe lugs pa-Schule. Die in vorliegender Studie erstmals vollstandig in deutscher Ubersetzung nebst Faksimiles des tibetischen Textes vorgelegten beiden Lebensbeschreibungen des dGe 'dun grub, die als Musterbeispiele der tibetischen hagiographischen Literatur angesehen werden konnen, stammen aus der Hand seiner unmittelbaren Schuler. Sie zeichnen dGe 'dun grub als Idealgestalt eines hohen Geistlichen und beschreiben die vorbildliche, durch nichts zu erschutternde Charakterstarke ihres Protagonisten, sein Streben nach Erlosung durch Studium und Meditation, seine "mystischen Erfahrungen," "(kirchen-)politischen" Aktivitaten und weitere Qualitaten und stellen sein Leben als nachahmenswertes Vorbild fur alle nach Erlosung trachtenden Wesen dar. In den einfuhrenden Kapiteln wird Leben und Wirken des dGe 'dun grub auf dem Hintergrund der sozialen, politischen und religiosen Situation der tibetischen Gesellschaft in der Provinz gTsang seiner Zeit nachgezeichnet. Da dGe 'dun grub als Mitgrunder der dGe lugs pa-Schule gilt und die Verbreitung der dGe lugs pa-Lehre in gTsang wohl sein grosstes Verdienst ist, gilt ein besonderes Augenmerk dGe 'dun grubs Lehr- und Bautatigkeit.
