Wolves howl to communicate with one another, to convey territorial information to another pack, and sometimes just for fun. It's a ritual considered important to pack unity and cohesion.
There are two species of wolf inhabiting the United States -- the red wolf and the gray wolf. The gray wolf is the most widespread and inhabits all of Canada as well as parts of Europe and Asia. Arctic wolves and Australian dingoes are subspecies of the gray wolf. The smaller red wolf is native to southeastern U.S. Yet another species, the Ethiopian wolf, is only found in the highlands of Ethiopia.
Wolves are relatives of dogs, but are not dogs and do not make good pets, nor do any dog-wolf mix offspring make good pets. They are not, however, usually considered dangerous to humans and will typically avoid them if possible. They are carnivores and usually go after the older, weaker, sick or young and vulnerable which helps keep that population healthier and more robust.
