Prologue I - Lâche ! lâche, lâche !... Ces mots retentirent, clairs, stridents, passionnés, dans un crescendo d'ardente indignation. Le jeune homme, tremblant de rage, s'était dressé d'un bond. Penché au-dessus de la table de jeu, il essaya encore de crier l'insulte à l'homme qui lui faisait face afin que tout le monde l'entendît. Mais les sons refusaient de sortir de sa gorge contractée et, tout en ramassant d'une main frémissante les cartes éparpillées, comme s'il voulait les jeter à la figure de son interlocuteur, il parvint seulement à répéter d'une voix étranglée: - Lâche !... Autour d'eux, les parties de pharaon et de lansquenet s'étaient interrompues. Des mouvements divers se produisirent parmi les spectateurs de la scène. Les plus âgés essayèrent de s'interposer, mais les jeunes se contentèrent de rire.
About the Author: biographiques. La Baronne Orczy est née en Hongrie en 1865, à Tarna-Ors. Elle est la fille d'un musicien, le Baron Felix Orczy, qui était également propriétaire terrien. Intéressé par les avancées agronomiques, le Baron Orczy a tenté d'appliquer les dernières découvertes agronomiques européennes, afin de moderniser son exploitation, restée, comme la plupart de celles de Hongrie à l'époque, très largement liée à un fonctionnement médiéval. Mais la population n'a pas supporté ces modifications, et Felix Orczy a subi ce qu'on pourrait appeler une révolte luddiste de la part des paysans alentour: ses fermes et ses champs ont été incendiés, et le Baron, ruiné, a dû quitter les lieux, et partir, avec toute sa famille, à Budapest. De là, il a émigré à Bruxelles, puis à Paris (villes dans lesquelles la jeune Emmuska Orczy suivra une partie de sa scolarité); puis à Londres En 1894, la Baronne épouse Montague Barstow, avec lequel elle va publier quelques textes, et en particulier un recueil de contes populaires hongrois (Old Hungarian Fairy Tales, 1895). Mais les véritables débuts littéraires d'Emmuska Orczy se feront sous l'influence de Sherlock Holmes et de Jack l'Eventreur. La légende veut que le second a tué l'une de ses victimes devant la porte de Barstow, marquant la Baronne. Mais c'est probablement davantage à la figure littéraire créée par Conan Doyle qu'Emmuska emprunte lorsqu'elle crée le personnage de The Old Man in the Corner, détective amateur accompagné d'un très féminin Watson, Miss Burton. Le succès des nouvelles, publiées dans la presse à partir de 1901, a conduit la Baronne à se tourner plus résolument vers l'écriture (elle qui s'imaginait plus volontiers peintre auparavant). C'est alors qu'elle en vient à imaginer l'intrigue du Mouron Rouge. Le Mouron Rouge a été refusé par de nombreux éditeurs, avant d'être publié en 1905, et de connaître un succès considérable. Cela a conduit la Baronne à en proposer de nombreuses suites qui, sans recevoir un aussi bon accueil, sont restées très populaires en Angleterre, donnant lieu à plusieurs adaptations cinématographiques du vivant de l'auteur. Malgré les efforts de la Baronne pour échapper à son personnage, elle ne rencontrera jamais un succès aussi important pour ses autres romans - généralement des romans d'aventures historiques. Elle a écrit, jusqu'à sa mort en 1947 à Monte Carlo, près de 60 romans.
