Il prit pour une vraie vocation ce qui n'etait de ma part que simple crainte d'etre arrete un beau matin, et conduit comme refractaire a la prison de Cherbourg, ainsi que cela etait arrive a deux de nos voisins que la gloire des armes ne tentait guere. Il me donna quelque argent et promit de subvenir aux besoins de mes parents, ce qu'il fit d'ailleurs jusqu'au jour ou je pus enfin revenir au pays, apres le desastre de Waterloo. -Va, mon garcon, me dit l'oncle Cadet... va rejoindre les defenseurs de la France et n'oublie pas qu'aujourd'hui le moindre soldat a peut-etre un baton de marechal dans sa giberne. Mon ambition n'allait pas si loin. J'aurais emmene mes parents avec moi, et nous aurions vecu soit a Aurigny, soit a Guernesey, jusqu'a la fin des hostilites. Mais tout le monde etait persuade que lorsque l'Empereur aurait reduit l'Angleterre, ce qui ne pouvait tarder, la paix regnerait de nouveau sur le monde. Ce ne fut point sans regret que je quittai mes parents pour suivre un sergent recruteur, sorte de soudard toujours ivre, aux facons grossieres et brutales, qui arborait avec orgueil un uniforme tout rapiece, rempli de taches, un bicorne cabosse et des bottes eculees. Malgre l'etat sordide de ses vetements, il ne manquait cependant pas d'allure avec son grand nez busque, ses sourcils broussailleux et sa longue moustache jaune toujours humide de vin. Il s'appelait Rossignol et etait originaire de l'Anjou. Il avait combattu a Savenay, a Quiberon, pendant la guerre de Vendee, avait fait Jemmapes, Fleurus, W rth et Coblentz... puis, apres le 18 Brumaire, Marengo, Hohenlinden, Ulm, Austerlitz, Eylau. Blesse quatre fois, il eut pu prendre une retraite bien gagnee, mais, soldat de carriere, n'ayant pas de metier, il avait refuse de redevenir un affreux pequin comme il disait et s'etait fait recruteur. Il visitait les campagnes dans une maringote et, avec l'aide des gendarmes, levait des conscrits, besogne qui n'etait guere penible et lui permettait de faire de longues stations dans les cabarets.
