Ll�est �vident que l'art ne doit point saisir les formes dans leurs propri�t�s abso lues et r�elles, mais bien relatives aux objets repr�sen t�s; que la ligne ne doit point se contenter d'etre ronde ou rectangulaire, mais de communiquer par son ondu lation ou son vague l'impression de l'objet repr�sent� que l'ensemble soit mouvement� selon le sujet. Ce sont ces qualit�s, incompr�hensibles au plus grand nombre qui agissent sur les spectateurs et font de M. Eug�ne Delacroix le premier peintre de notre �poque. Le con traire existe dans toutes les �coles �trang�res, et la pens�e chez eux � quelques exceptions pr�s, est ]atr�s - humble servante du proc�d�. Aussi voyons-nous des �toiles bien rendues, des accessoires infiniment soign�s enfin tout ce qui constitue l'industrie pouss� au dernier degr� et l'art �touffer sous cette avalanche d'oripeaux. Ceci nous remet en souvenir cet artiste grec qui, ne pouvant faire une V�nus belle se contente de la. Faire riche; que nous fait le sujet choisi par le peintre quoique des maladroits aient reproch� aux peintres de genre de ne s'inspirer que de sc�nes Que faut-il � Rapha�l pour �tre divin?... une femme et un enfant. Rubens se serait donc priv� de faire des Vierges parce que Raphael les avait faites divines. Prud'hon ne serait donc pas un grand peintre parce que nous avons l'anti0pe du Correge et michel-ange nous emp�cherait d'admirer Puj et Erreur Tous sont grands parce que tous ont interpr�t� la nature dans un sentiment personnel et intime. Le plus grand d�faut des ma�tres �trangers, dont nous pouvons appr� 9 cier les oeuvres, est cette sup�riorit� du faire qui absorbe toute autre pens�e la conception n'est que secondaire l'expression po�tique nulle; aussi, restons - nous froids devant leurs tableaux. Toute composition, quel qu'en soit le suj et, doit avoir un sens intime, sens profond que l'artiste communique au Spectateur et qui l'�meut � sa vue. Si la repr�sentation mat�rialis�e n'mpressionn&it pas plus que la po�sie, la peinture perdrait �videmment de son importance et n'aurait aucun but social. Ainsi, le peintre dont le proc�d� plus d'importance que le sujet, peut �tre compar� � un beau parleur dont les phrases n'ont aucun sens Tu parles tr�s bien, mais tu ne dis rien. Que voulez - vous; pour moi, pastiche sys teme, adresse de faire, banalit� de pens�e sont sync nymes, et l'artiste qui n'est que savant ou habile est pour moi inutile. C'est comme une femme tr�s-belle qui est tr�s - born�e; il vient toujours un moment o� sa beaut� devient � charge. Puisque nos h�tes ont affront� la lutte nous les en f�licitons, et nous les prions de nous pardonner une s�v�rit� artistique que notre devoir nous impose L'h05pitalit� est sinc�re et la critique sera loyale.
