Après Poussin, nous retombons avec les frères Le Nain dans le réalisme le moins déguisé, le moins préoccupé de noblesse et d'élévation. Le Sueur conserve seul le merveilleux équilibre entre les deux tendances. Le Brun réagit de nouveau dans le sens de la fausse grandeur. À l'école de ce maître succède celle du XVIIIe siècle, qui retourne par une pente rapide à l'extrême négation de tout ce qui est grand. Le réalisme de Chardin a plus de hauteur toutefois que celui des Le Nain; aussi est-ce dans l'oeuvre de ces artistes qu'il est bon de l'étudier pour le bien connaître. On ne saurait choisir, à ce point de vue, un meilleur objet d'étude que les travaux de cette famille d'artistes, les frères Le Nain, qu'on a pu très justement nommer les peintres du réel sous Louis XIII. Et d'ailleurs c'est prendre le principe dans l'une de ses premières et de ses plus naïves expressions que de l'aller chercher dans l'oeuvre de ces peintres si longtemps oubliés qu'on remet en honneur aujourd'hui...
