About the Book

In the tradition of The 48 Laws of Power and Machiavelli's The Prince comes what many are calling the definitive power manual for the 21st Century...

Computer programmer Paul Calder Le Roux went from writing encryption software in his cramped studio apartment to heading a drug and arms trafficking ring responsible for war, death, and disorder on six continents.

His starter kit?

Nothing more than a dusty Dell laptop and a mind custom-built for mayhem.

Part dramatic recreation, part playbook for the criminally insane, Le Roux's Rules distills hard-won lessons in underworld leadership from a proven source

RULE 1:

KEEP YOUR ENEMIES (AND EMPLOYEES) IN THE DARK

Le Roux's downfall begins with three Philippine police officers boarding a boat off the coast of Bataan. They've received a tip about suspicious cargo on the M/V Captain Ufuk, a twenty-four-hundred ton vessel purchased in Turkey and piloted until the night before by a British expat named Bruce Jones who is now nowhere to be found. The officers start breaking open crates and discover dozens of assault rifles, bayonets, and magazines. They arrest the skipper and remaining crew members. The investigation is under way.

Jones, for his part, is ready to talk to the authorities after being named prime suspect in what's rapidly turning into a major news story. Rumors fly that the guns were supposed to end up in the hands of terrorists linked to al-Qaeda. Jones tells anyone who will listen he had no idea, thought things were on the up and up since Indonesian police watched the crates loaded on board and the crew was given an end-user certificate showing final sale to the government of Mali. His lawyer Joe Frank Zuniga puts him in touch with a reporter who spreads it around that Jones is a patsy employed by La Plata Trading, a shell company secretly owned by Paul Calder Le Roux, whom Jones knows simply as "Johan."

"Johan," of course, is just one of Le Roux's many pseudonyms.

Benny.

Alexander.

John Bernard Bowlins.

The list goes on.

Whatever his name, our villain is something of a nerd. Spends the majority of his waking hours in front of a computer screen: an awkward, overweight code monkey who almost never leaves his workstation in a spacious penthouse on the 45th floor of a skyscraper overlooking Makati City.

He has an identical apartment across the street he keeps listed as his official residence, the idea being that if the cops ever kick the door down over there Le Roux will see the raid in real-time and make his escape.

His laptop is set up so as to erase every file the minute it slams shut.

The only furniture besides his workstation is a sofa and four chairs. Not big on clothes, he wears the same flip-flops, shirt, and shorts ensemble each day.

Living out of a suitcase basically.

He is a white man born in what is now the black run state of Zimbabwe, raised in South Africa during the final days of apartheid.

A digital nomad with a preference for working remotely, Le Roux has traveled the world hoping to find a suitable substitute for a home that no longer exists.

For business purposes, the Philippines will do.

"Best shit hole I can find," is how he puts it.

Easy to bribe officials.

Lax income tax enforcement.

Hitmen willing to kill for the cost of a monthly data plan.

Le Roux waits a full year before contracting the death of Bruce Jones by killers like these. They catch up with him on his way to a gun range, two men on motorcycle swerving in front of his gray Mitsubishi and forcing it to stop. The mystery man on the back of the Honda, anonymous under his helmet, approaches the driver's side and unloads on Jones with a .45 caliber handgun...
