Ayant appris que ses ennemis le guerroyaient, Rivalen, roi de Loonnois, franchit la mer pour lui porter son aide. Il le servit par l'épée et par le conseil, comme eût fait un vassal, si fidèlement que Marc lui donna en récompense la belle Blanchefleur, sa soeur, que le roi Rivalen aimait d'un merveilleux amour. Il la prit à femme au moutier de Tintagel. Mais à peine l'eut-il épousée, la nouvelle lui vint que son ancien ennemi, le duc Morgan, s'étant abattu sur le Loonnois, ruinait ses bourgs, ses camps, ses villes. Rivalen équipa ses nefs hâtivement et emporta Blanchefleur, qui se trouvait grosse, vers sa terre lointaine. Il atterrit devant son château de Kanoël, confia la reine à la sauvegarde de son maréchal Rohalt, Rohalt que tous, pour sa loyauté, appelaient d'un beau nom, Rohalt le Foi-Tenant; puis, ayant rassemblé ses barons, Rivalen partit pour soutenir sa guerre. Blanchefleur l'attendit longuement. Hélas ! il ne devait pas revenir. Un jour, elle apprit que le duc Morgan l'avait tué en trahison. Elle ne le pleura point: ni cris, ni lamentations, mais ses membres devinrent faibles et vains; son âme voulut, d'un fort désir, s'arracher de son corps. Rohalt s'efforçait de la consoler: Reine, disait-il, on ne peut rien gagner à mettre deuil sur deuil; tous ceux qui naissent ne doivent-ils pas mourir ? Que Dieu reçoive les morts et préserve les vivants !... Mais elle ne voulut pas l'écouter. Trois jours elle attendit de rejoindre son cher seigneur. Au quatrième jour, elle mit au monde un fils, et, l'ayant pris entre ses bras: Fils, lui dit-elle, j'ai longtemps désiré de te voir; et je vois la plus belle créature que femme ait jamais portée. Triste j'accouche, triste est la première fête que je te fais, à cause de toi j'ai tristesse à mourir. Et comme ainsi tu es venu sur terre par tristesse, tu auras nom Tristan. Charles Marie Joseph Bédier, né le 28 janvier 1864 à Paris 6em et mort le 29 août 1938 au Grand-Serre dans la Drôme, est un philologue romaniste français, spécialiste de la littérature médiévale. D'origine bretonne, il passe son enfance à La Réunion, puis devient professeur de littérature française du Moyen Âge. Il publie de nombreux textes médiévaux en français moderne, tels que Tristan et Iseut (1900), La Chanson de Roland (1921), les Fabliaux (1893). Il est élu membre de l'Académie française en 1920.
