La vie de Tahoser Tahoser, l'heroine du roman, est la fille d'un grand pretre d'Egypte, Petamounoph. Lorsque le recit debute, c'est une adolescente de seize ans, d'une grande beaute. Elle est aimee d'Ahmosis, mais elle ne l'aime pas. En fait, Tahoser est amoureuse d'un homme legerement plus age qu'elle, Poeri. Celui-ci est un juif, qui est promis a Rachel. Elle fait sa connaissance sous le nom de Hora et se fait prendre pour une jeune fille pauvre, en quete d'un asile. Un jour, au crepuscule, elle suit Poeri afin de savoir qui est celle qu'il aime. C'est alors qu'elle fait la rencontre de Rachel, une pauvre juive, tres belle. Neanmoins, Tahoser ignore qu'elle a ete remarquee par Pharaon, qui a jete son devolu sur elle. Il la fait rechercher dans toute l'Egypte. Tahoser est denoncee par Thamar, la fidele suivante de Rachel, qui voit d'un mauvais il cette non-juive qui risquerait de detourner Poeri de Rachel. Pharaon se rend au domicile de Poeri et ordonne a Tahoser de le suivre. Celle-ci est stupefaite d'apprendre qu'elle fait l'objet de l'attention de Pharaon, tandis que Thamar est largement retribuee de sa denonciation. Par la suite, le lecteur apprend que le peuple Hebreu est esclave en Egypte, et que sous la houlette de son guide charismatique, Moise, il cherche a quitter l'Egypte. Pharaon s'oppose aux demandes successives de Moise, qui en represailles envoie les dix plaies d'Egypte. Pharaon finit par capituler, et permet aux Hebreux de quitter le pays, a la grande joie de Tahoser. Regrettant rapidement son geste, Pharaon poursuit les Hebreux et s'apprete a tous les massacrer, lorsque son armee et lui-meme sont engloutis dans les eaux de la Mer rouge. Les Hebreux peuvent donc quitter le pays et se rendre en Canaan. Theophile Gautier, ne a Tarbes le 30 aout 1811 et mort a Neuilly-sur-Seine le 23 octobre 1872, est un poete, romancier et critique d'art francais. Ne a Tarbes, Theophile Gautier est cependant parisien depuis sa plus jeune enfance. Il fait la connaissance du futur Nerval au College Charlemagne et s'interesse tres jeune a la poesie. En 1829 il rencontre Victor Hugo qu'il reconnait pour son maitre et participe activement au mouvement romantique comme lors de la fameuse bataille d'Hernani, le 25 fevrier 1830. Il evoquera avec humour cette periode en 1833 dans Les Jeunes-France. Il publie en 1831-1832 ses premieres poesies qui passent inapercues mais il se distingue de ses amis romantiques par ses preoccupations formalistes fustigeant les visions moralistes ou utilitaires de la litterature dans la celebre preface a son roman epistolaire Mademoiselle de Maupin (1835). Il ecrit aussi ses premieres nouvelles comme La Cafetiere (1831), dans une veine fantastique qu'il approfondira dans d'autres uvres (Le Roman de la momie, 1858). En 1836, a la demande de Balzac, il donne des nouvelles et des critiques d'art au journal La Chronique de Paris. Il collabore ensuite intensement a d'autres journaux, en particulier La Presse d'Emile de Girardin: certains de ces textes seront regroupes plus tard en volumes (Les Grotesques, Souvenirs litteraires...). Il publie aussi des poemes (La Comedie de la Mort, 1838) et s'essaie au theatre (Une larme du diable, 1839). En mai 1845, il accomplit un grand voyage au-dela des Pyrenees dont il rapporte un carnet d'impressions (Voyage en Espagne) et de nouveaux poemes (Espana, 1845). D'autres voyages en Algerie, en Italie, en Grece, en Egypte, nourriront aussi diverses publications."
