About the Book

Le troisieme livre du Psautier est nettement plus court que le premier et surtout que le cinquieme. Ses dix-sept psaumes forment neanmoins une composition qui ne le cede en rien a celle des deux autres livres. La tonalite generale du livre est tres sombre. Ce ne sont que plaintes, supplications et questions angoissees - Pourquoi ? , Jusqu'a quand ? Et les reponses a ces questions ne semblent pas faites pour consoler les malheureux. S'ils sont tombes dans la detresse et l'angoisse, c'est qu'ils paient le prix de leurs peches (78; 89). Ayant trahi l'alliance du temps de l'exode, ayant recidive au temps de la monarchie davidique, les voila livres a la violence et a l'oppression de leurs ennemis. On croit entendre la voix du Serviteur crier, au centre du premier livre: Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m'as-tu abandonne ? (Ps 22,2). Mais le Ps 22 ne s'arrete pas dans la tombe. Le psalmiste est sauve de la gueule du lion et il peut dire: J'annoncerai ton nom a mes freres, en pleine assemblee je te louerai (23) et meme: toutes les familles des nations se prosterneront devant lui (28). De meme, il est dans le troisieme livre trois psaumes ou retentit la louange, chacun occupant une position strategique. Au centre de la premiere sequence de la section initiale (Ps 75) avec tout son peuple le psalmiste rend gryce en voyant le Seigneur prononcer le jugement contre les arrogants et il se rejouit a la pensee de pouvoir bientot leur trancher les cornes. Au centre de la section centrale (Ps 81), un fervent appel a la louange pour celebrer la sortie d'Egypte precede un long discours de Dieu qui promet une nouvelle liberation des ennemis actuels ainsi que leur conversion. Enfin, au centre de la premiere sequence de la section finale, du fond de sa misere David confirme la conversion finale des paiens: Toutes les nations que tu as faites viendront et se prosterneront devant ta face, Seigneur, et ils rendront gloire a ton nom (86,9). Comme pour le serviteur du Ps 22, il fallait que le peuple et son roi traversent la mort pour que la lumiere de la revelation atteigne tous les lointains de la terre.
