About the Book

English summary: Like the first, third and fifth books, the second book of the Psalter forms a very elaborate composition. Indeed, it is not only each of its thirty psalms that is well composed, it is also each of the sequences that join two or three psalms and the five sections organized according to a concentric architecture around the five mid-voice psalms (Ps 56-60). Two complementary movements structure and animate the whole book. On the one hand, evil and violence are everywhere, as are enemies. It is first those on the outside, the pagan peoples, who trample on Israel; but the psalmist then discovers that those on the inside are no less violent, up to the one in whom he had put his trust. It is that sin, rooted since time immemorial, that marks all men. On the other hand, salvation is for all those who trust in God, in his faithfulness and in his truth. And the action of grace resounds throughout, until the end. It is echoed not only in the mouths of the sons of Israel saved by their God, but also on the lips of all other peoples-bringing presents to the Temple, they raised their hands in prayer to the one God, King of the whole earth. They, who at the beginning of the book were presented as the enemies and oppressors of the chosen people, will join Israel at the end in the same blessing, the one promised to Abraham: "and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed" (Gen 22:18).
