Premier des prophètes de l'Ancien Testament, Amos était un berger du sud de Bethléem. Son nom signifie "porteur". Il apparaît en 750 avant J.-C. sous le règne de Jéroboam II en Israël. C'était une époque de prospérité qui a profité aux grands propriétaires terriens et aux aristocrates. L'Assyrie et Juda étaient associés. L'adoration de Dieu est florissante dans de nombreux sanctuaires, en particulier à Béthel et à Sichem, mais Dieu était adoré sous la forme d'un taureau d'or. À Jérusalem, où le vrai culte est maintenu, le peuple refuse toute image. Amos, envoyé par Dieu, venait prêcher dans le Royaume du Nord. Il se rendait en Samarie, la capitale du Nord, et écrivait son livre vers 800 avant J.-C.Il était la clé du message de justice sociale et d'ordre moral. Le prophète avertit Israël de la menace (la ruine du Royaume d'Israël). "Je m'attaquerai aux maisons, à leur maison d'hiver et d'été, et les maisons d'ivoire seront dévastées" (Am 3, 35). "La fin est venue pour Israël... Jéroboam mourra par l'épée et Israël sera banni de son propre pays" (Am 7, 11). Cependant, cette punition fera apparaître un reste qui sera nettoyé et restauré. Amos a dénoncé la vie de luxe des riches. Il s'attaque aux injustices des grands. En particulier, la vitupération contre la femme de Samarie, "Ecoutez Oracle, les vaches de Basan qui vivent dans les montagnes de Samarie..." (Amos 4:1-3). Il a également dénoncé la fraude, l'idolâtrie au Béthel. Amos a critiqué l'hypocrisie du culte: "Je déteste vos fêtes, j'ai du dégoût, je n'ai aucune attirance pour votre culte. Quand vous me proposez des holocaustes et que je ne trouve aucun plaisir... Enlevez-moi le bruit de vos chansons... mais que l'équité jaillit comme une fontaine, et la justice comme un puissant ruisseau" (Am 5, 21). Enfin, dénoncer le manque de compassion pour les frères israéliens, ils ont plongé dans la pauvreté et l'immoralité et le manque de respect pour les prophètes et les hommes de Dieu. Par conséquent, la punition divine ne sera pas longue. Un groupe de survivants sera épargné et ce sera une paix durable. Le message d'Amos n'a pas été entendu. Il contient de nombreuses références à l'histoire de Moïse. Amos était un solitaire, sans disciple. Son livre n'est pas chronologique. C'était un poète talentueux, endurci par sa vie, l'un des plus grands poètes de l'hébreu biblique.
