About the Author: Guillaume Apollinaire, pseudonimo di Wi-lhelm Apollinaris de Kostrowitzky, poeta e prosatore francese, nasce a Roma il 26 agosto del 1880, da Francesco Flugi d'Aspermont, un ex ufficiale borbonico e Angelika de Waz-Kostrowicki, una nobildonna polacca. Tra-scorre la sua infanzia a Monaco con la sola madre, poiché non sarà mai riconosciuto dal padre. La sua adolescenza è caratterizzata da vaste e disordinate letture e da numerosi viaggi. Nel 1898 si diploma e nel 1899 si trasferisce a Parigi, dove frequenta buona parte dell'élite intellettuale del suo tempo. Nel 1911 viene ingiustamente incarcerato per alcuni giorni sotto l'accusa di aver partecipato a un furto avvenuto nel Museo del Louvre. Questo doloroso episodio è documentato in alcune poesie di Alcools. Nel 1913 pubblica Alcools, la sua più celebre raccolta di poesie. Un'opera che rinnoverà profondamente la letteratura francese. Allo scoppio della prima guerra mondiale, si arruola come volontario. Nel 1916 viene ferito a una tempia e subisce un difficile intervento chirurgico. Nel 1918, conosce Jacqueline Kohl, che sposa nel mese di luglio, poco tempo dopo, Apolli-naire si ammala d'influenza spagnola a causa della quale muore il 9 novembre di quello stesso anno.
