Extrait chapitre I La nuit est noire; il pleut à verse, et la pluie, fouettée par le vent, grésille sur les vitres d'une maisonnette isolée, tout au bout du boulevard Voltaire, et tout près de la place du Trône. Une maisonnette et non pas une villa, ni un petit hôtel. Un rez-de-chaussée, un étage et des mansardes. Pas de cour, pas de grille, pas de perron. Rien qu'une palissade en planches du côté de la rue et, derrière cette clôture primitive, un terrain vague qui confine à des jardins maraîchers. L'architecte n'a pas pris la peine de creuser pour asseoir des fondations. Cette bastide parisienne pose à plat sur le sol, comme si on l'y avait apportée toute bâtie. Elle est habitée, car il y a de la lumière à une des fenêtres du rez-de-chaussée. Qui peut demeurer là ? Pas des capitalistes, bien certainement; les capitaux n'y seraient pas en sûreté. Des commerçants ? Pas davantage; les chalands n'iraient pas les chercher si loin du centre. Cette niche en cailloutis ne convient guère qu'à un vieux rentier misanthrope, retiré là comme un hibou dans un clocher, ou encore à un ménage de petits bourgeois réduits au strict nécessaire et cultivant des légumes dans leur enclos pour corser leur maigre pot-au-feu. Ainsi pensaient les passants qui remarquaient ce cube de maçonnerie, planté là comme une borne au milieu d'un champ; ainsi pensaient même les voisins qui connaissaient à peine de vue les occupants de ce château de la misère. Ils se trompaient tous et il leur aurait suffi de passer le seuil de la maisonnette pour constater que si, à l'extérieur, elle ne payait pas de mine, elle était du moins confortablement meublée.
About the Author: Fortuné Hippolyte Auguste Abraham-Dubois, dit Fortuné du Boisgobey, né à Granville le 11 septembre 1821 et mort en février 1891 à Paris, est un auteur français de romans judiciaires et policiers (Le Pouce crochu, Le Crime de l'omnibus, Le Collier d'acier, etc.), mais aussi de romans historiques (Le Demi-Monde sous la Terreur, Les Collets noirs, etc.), ainsi que quelques récits de voyage (Du Rhin au Nil). Biographie Issu d'une famille aisée, son père fut maire de Granville de 1830 à 1834 et député de la Manche pendant 18 ans, Fortuné du Boisgobey a fait ses études au Collège d'Avranches puis au lycée Saint-Louis et enfin à l'École de droit. Durant la Monarchie de Juillet dont sa famille était partisane, il sert de 1844 à 1848, dans la section des soldes de l'armée d'Algérie avant de poursuivre ses voyages en Orient. Il ne devint feuilletoniste que sur le tard, après avoir abandonné l'Administration des Finances. Ayant fait son entrée en littérature en 1843, avec la publication dans le Journal d'Avranches, sous le nom de nom de plume de Fortuné Abraham-Dubois, une série intitulée Lettres de Sicile, où il racontait un voyage effectué l'année précédente, il renoue avec les lettres, à la suite d'un revers de fortune, en 1868, sous le nom de nom de plume de Fortuné du Boisgobey, avec une histoire intitulée Deux comédiens dans Le Petit Journal, qui sera éditée en livre sous le titre l'Auberge de la Noble-Rose en 1880. L'histoire aura du succès auprès du public, et Paul Dalloz, du Petit Moniteur, signera avec l'auteur un contrat à 12 000 francs, un an pour sept ans.
