Les auteurs anciens rappellent volontiers la double vocation delienne: sanctuaire et place de commerce. De cette ville sainte, Pausanias fait "l'emporion commun de la Grece". Strabon note l'importance de son marche aux esclaves et rapporte que, selon un proverbe, les marchands n'ont pas grand mal a faire fortune dans l'Ile: il leur suffit d'y debarquer. Ces temoignages ont encourage les recherches sur le commerce de la Delos antique. Mais, bien que nombreuses, elles ont le plus souvent neglige l'amenagement de son littoral, sujet de ce livre. C'est qu'il n'est pas facile de se representer les realites portuaires deliennes. On accoste aujourd'hui dans l'OEle d'Apollon sur un mole constitue par les deblais de la "grande fouille"; les quais du Port sacre, a l'ouest du sanctuaire, sont en partie enfouis, recouverts de ciment moderne ou submerges. Le dossier du littoral delien est ici rouvert a partir des travaux de Johannes Pyris - des travaux brusquement arretes par la Premiere Guerre mondiale ou ce jeune homme perdit la vie. Ce volume fait connaitre les differents aspects d'une enquete pionniere suspendue par les evenements. Mais pour illustrer, commenter et comprendre carnets de fouilles, dessins et papiers inedits, la necessite de nouvelles investigations et d'une prospection sous-marine s'est vite imposee. Ce reexamen de la facade maritime a permis notamment de photographier pour la premiere fois les vestiges immerges et d'engager une reflexion sur les variations de la ligne de rivage. Avec l'ambition de proposer une restitution du paysage portuaire et de degager les grandes lignes de son evolution jusqu'au temps present. Le present ouvrage suit une triple approche. Il montre d'abord comme des voyageurs aux archeologues, ce littoral se constitua tres lentement en un objet d'etude. Une lecture des vestiges du rivage propose ensuite une archeologie du front de mer. L'emprise des docks est moins importante qu'on ne le supposait. On a eu tendance a faire de tout bytiment non identifie en bord de mer un entrepot. Les amenagements portuaires de Delos n'ont d'ailleurs pas ete imposes par les seules exigences du commerce, mais par des conditions naturelles defavorables. Ce paysage est enfin replace dans une histoire: celle des hommes et du littoral. Les temoignages litteraires et epigraphiques sont confrontes aux donnees archeologiques pour eclairer le statut et le fonctionnement de l'emporion. L'analyse de l'evolution du littoral dans l'archipel delien suggere une remontee recente du niveau marin, mais souligne que la ligne de rivage connut de profondes modifications des l'antiquite. L'activite des Deliens sur le front de mer apparaOEt ainsi avoir ete guidee par la double volonte de faire fructifier leurs interets et de composer avec les elements naturels.
