Si les écrivains grecs et latins nous ont transmis des notions précises sur les pratiques des religions officielles, ils nous renseignent beaucoup moins sur les cultes rus tiques, _sur les superstitions des paysans de la Grèce, de l'italie et auss1 sur les idées des peuples que les Romains subjugerent successivement. Les écrivains les plus curieux ne décrivent guère que les cultes organisés et les pra tiques qui se font en public rarement ils se préoccupent des idées cultuelles ou superstitieuses des classes popu laires rurales. Elles ne figurent que par hasard, pour ainsi dire, chez la plupart des prosateurs, et c'est peut ètre aux poètes que nous devons le plus de renseignements sur ces actes dont le pittoresque les séduisait. Nous connaissons sans doute par quelques passages, d'ordi naire peu détaillés, quelques-uns des hommages rendus aux forces de la nature et en particulier aux arbres et aux fontaines ou aux divinités rustiques qui y prési daient. Pour d'autres cultes, celui des pierres brutes, par exemple, si l'on ne relevait parfois des allusions assez peu précises à des offrandes, on serait presque tenté de croire qu'il n'existait pas, mème en Gaule et en Bretagne où, à l'aurore mème du vingtième siècle, il est loin d'ètre éteint.
