Walter Scott (Sir Walter Scott, 1er baronnet) est un poète et écrivain écossais né le 15 août 1771 à Édimbourg et mort le 21 septembre 1832 à Abbotsford.Avocat de formation, amateur d'antiquités, il parcourt d'abord l'Écosse à la recherche de son passé. Au tournant du XVIIIe et du XIXe siècles, il se lance dans la littérature, publiant des textes anciens (Sir Tristrem) ou appartenant à la tradition populaire (dans Les Chants de ménestrels de la frontière écossaise) ainsi que des poèmes de son cru, comme La Dame du lac. Puis, devant la gloire montante de Lord Byron, il se tourne vers le roman écossais (Waverley), avant d'évoluer vers le roman historique, avec Ivanhoé (1819) et Quentin Durward (1823).C'est l'un des plus célèbres auteurs écossais avec David Hume de Godscroft, David Hume, Adam Smith, Robert Burns ou Robert Louis Stevenson. Il est également, avec Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley ou Keats, l'une des plus illustres figures du romantisme britannique. Père du roman historique, il a contribué à forger une image romantique de l'Écosse et de son histoire. C'est à lui, notamment, que l'on doit le retour de l'usage du tartan et du kilt, dont le port avait été interdit par une loi du Parlement en 1746.Extrait: Le village décrit par le manuscrit du bénédictin, et nommé par lui Kennaquhair, est connu en effet sous une dénomination qui se termine par la même syllabe celtique que Traqubair, Caqubair, et autres composés. Le savant Chalmers tire le mol quhair du cours sinueux d'une rivière, étymologie qui coïncide singulièrement avec les nombreux détours de la Tweed près du village dont nous parlons. Ce village fut longtemps célèbre à cause du superbe monastère de Sainte-Marie, fondé par David Ier, roi d'Écosse, sous le règne duquel se formèrent dans le même comté les établissements non moins considérables de Melrose, Jedburgh et Kelso. Les concessions de terres dont le roi dota ces opulentes communautés lui firent donner par les historiens monastiques l'épithète de saint, et lui attirèrent de la part d'un de ses descendants appauvris ce reproche amer d'avoir été un rude saint pour la couronne. Il paraît néanmoins que David, monarque sage autant que pieux, n'était pas uniquement mu par des motifs religieux dans sa munificence envers l'Église, mais qu'il alliait des vues politiques à sa pieuse générosité. Ses possessions dans le Northumberland et le Cumberland étaient devenues précaires depuis qu'il avait perdu la bataille de l'Étendard; et comme il avait à craindre que la vallée comparativement fertile de Teviot ne devînt la frontière de son royaume, on peut penser que le roi voulût sauver une partie de ces précieuses possessions en les plaçant entre les mains des moines, dont les propriétés furent longtemps respectées, même au plus fort de la rage des partis guerroyant sur la frontière. Ce n'était que par ce moyen que David pouvait assurer protection et sécurité aux cultivateurs du sol; en effet, les possessions ecclésiastiques furent pendant plusieurs siècles une terre de Gessen, jouissant d'un calme profond, tandis que le reste de la contrée, occupé par des clans sauvages et des barons maraudeurs, offrait une scène affreuse de confusion, de sang et de licence effrénée.
